Family History Inquiry Project: Integrating Technology with Social Studies in First Grade

IN1.1, DR1.1, DR1.2, RW1.1 - Family History Inquiry Project in action. Although this article comes from the U.S., there are lots of connections to our SK Curriculum. Incorporates technology to help kids learn about their family history.

In this Grade 1 inquiry project, the students compare past and present.  Students to do more than compare their lives to abstract figures from the past. They make personal connections and are engaged in the process of finding out what life really was like in the past, as well as find similarities to their own lives. Through the use of technology, iPod Nanos and mini-camcorders, students are allowed to ask questions, analyze their grandparent's stories, and report their findings without being bogged down by their limited writing abilities. For English language learners, the use of technology permits them to gather stories in their families' native language.
