How to Summarize

This graphic organizer outlines the difference between a summary and a paraphrase.  It also outlines the steps in writing a summary.  A short selection is included for practice.  This is a good resource for any subject area. 

How to Write a Summary (from the graphic organizer)

  1. Read the entire selection. 
  2. Circle the most important words and phrases. 
  3. Write 8 of the most important words or phrases.
  4. Use the list to create a summary restating the main points.
