WHAT IS ORTHOGRAPHIC MAPPING?Orthographic Mapping is the process of forming letter-sound connections in order to combine and recall the spelling, pronunciation, and the meaning of words. It is the mental process we use to permanently store words for immediate, effortless retrieval.  Orthographic mapping is a skill that develops from phonemic awareness and grapheme-phoneme knowledge. In order for a child to read fluently, they must have developed orthographic recognition or the ability to quickly recognize letter patterns that make up a word that they know or a series of letter strings that is familiar, such as the suffix ‘ing’ or the prefix ‘pre.’CONNECTIONS TO WRITINGOrthographic recall is required in order for the child to demonstrate spelling abilities. In order to be good orthographic mappers, three skills need to be developed:
  1. Automatic letter-sound association
  2. Proficient phonemic awareness
  3. Word study (process of connecting phonemes in spoken words to the written form of the word) Word study anchors words in permanent memory
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE IN THE CLASSROOM? IN GROUP?
  • Phonemic awareness activities
  • Direct letter sound teaching and practice
  • Word study activities ( Equipped for Reading Success, David Kilpatrick, Chapter 6)
  • Word family cube spelling game (print word families on a dice, students roll dice and spell a word with the word family pattern)
  • Sequential Spelling- supports letter strings becoming familiar
  • Introduce words orally, count the number of sounds in each word, use elkonin boxes to print the letters (video above - https://youtu.be/hkdu7xaCo6I )
  • Word family bingo game- when the student covers a word family with the bingo chip, he/she must spell a word with that word family
