Independent Novel Study Post-Reading Projects

Once you have completed the novel, pick any combination of assignments that add up to 50 marks.

 

All assignments are expected to show effort and sufficient details and analysis appropriate to grade-level.  Assignments should demonstrate a strong connection to the novel and use specific evidence from the novel to showcase your understanding of the novel, characters, themes, etc.

  

10 MARKS EACH (about one page)

  1.  Discuss how the main character is like or unlike another person that you know (fictional or non-fictional).
  2.  Describe an experience you've had that was like the experience of a character in the book.
  3. Write any kind of poem about your book.  (Min. 16 lines)
  4. Write an obituary for one character (if applicable).
  5. Explain how a character in the book changed from the beginning to the end
  6. If the book has a villain, why was his or her punishment justified. 
  7. Read and record a short passage from the novel, and explain why you chose to read that particular passage and its importance to the novel.

15 MARKS EACH

8.  Draw an important scene from the novel.  On the back of the picture, write a paragraph which describes why you chose the image you did and why that scene was so essential to the novel.

9.  Write a review of the novel wherein you try to get someone else to read it.

 10.  Write another part of the story where you describe what happened to the main character after the story ended.

 11.  Write a letter from the point of view of one of the characters in the novel.

 12.  Write two articles about events in the novel for a newspaper published at the time of a major event in your book.

 13.  Write an interview with one of the major characters.

 14.  Write several diary entries made by one of the major characters.

 15.  Describe the conflicts/problems the major characters had in the novel and how they managed to overcome them. 

      

20 MARKS EACH

16.  Create a word collage about the book.  Write the title of the book in the centre of the page, and then look through magazines or other media for words, phrases, and sentences that illustrate or tell something about your book in terms of theme, setting, plot line, conflicts, characters, etc.  You should have at least THIRTY to FIFTY such words, phrases, or sentences so a whole sheet of computer paper will be covered.

 17.  Review the book that you read and compare it to a movie or another book that relates to your novel.  What happened in each, how were they similar/dissimilar, and which was better and why?

18.  Find FIVE songs that seem to relate to your novel, then write an explanation of how the lyrics of the song relate to the novel.

19.  Pretend you are a character in the novel and describe the other characters in the novel and what you think of each of them. Explain why.

20.  Make a illustrated presentation of at least SIX keepsakes that would be important from the view of the main character.  For each, explain why it would be important to the character.

21.  Keep a journal as you read your book:  record the dates and your reactions, thoughts, feelings.

22.  Create your own original and creative assignment based on the novel.  Please see your teacher for approval if you want to pursue this choice!

 

  Independent Novel Study Marking Guide:

 The assignments for this novel study will be evaluated based on the following rubric.  Assignments are expected to be of a quality that is grade-level appropriate (assignments are thoughtful, detailed, and connected to the novel).
