Survival Poetry

Read the poem “Survival” written by Iris Tennent.  Answer the questions below to the best of your ability in full sentences with your partner on a piece of loose-leaf.  You will hand these in at the end of the rotation.

1.     What do you think is the message that the author of the poem is attempting to get across to readers?

2.     What are the author’s views of humankind?  Do you agree with her?  Why or why not?

3.     What different patterns can you see in this poem?  Name as many as you can (both in content and structure of the poem).

4.     In your opinion, list 5 adjectives to describe the mood of this poem.

5.     With your partner, come up with one more stanza to this poem.  Use the same types of patterns that the author uses and also give a brief description of where in the poem you would place the stanza. (It could go at the beginning, or end, or between any of the other stanzas.)
