Movie Poster

Your novel may or not have a movie made about it, but either way, you get to make your OWN version of a movie poster to promote and tell the story!

ü  Read the assignment before you start

ü  Use the included planner to make sure you don’t miss anything

ü  Sketch it out on paper first before you create.  PLAN.

ü  Use technology if you like!

Life Box

A life box is a representation of items a character would have, or items that represent them in the story.  It is like a character study.

You create a container, collect or make items, and write descriptions of the items and connect them to the story.  This is a lot of fun!

ü  Use this assignment and this card template planner to create your life box for the character of your choice.

Picture Book

Create a picture book version of your novel for younger students to enjoy!

You’ll start by selecting and sequencing the 10 most important events of the plot. (More information is in the planner!)

ü  Use this planner

ü  Create your book on paper or use Book Creator or another application your teacher approves

ü  Share your book!

Story Cube

Create a story cube about the novel you have created.  You can make your cube as big as you like!

ü  Use the planner to make sure you include everything.

ü  There is a template if you wish to use it.

Music Playlist

Create a music playlist for one of the characters in your novel.  You’ll need 10 songs.  For each song you will describe when they would listen to it, the mood and why.

Alternately, you can make a soundtrack for your novel, and provide the same information as above.

ü  Use the planner

ü  Create your presentation.

ü  Share!

Comic

Create a comic version of your novel.

Start by making a list of all of the important events and deciding how many panels you need for each.  Sketch it out with stick figures to plan it before you do a good copy.

The planner above for the Picture Book may be a big help.  (Pick the 10 main events and work from there!)

Create your comic online, or old school on paper with a ruler, or use a template.

How To Manual

Procedural knowledge tells us how to do something.  You can create your very own “How To” manual based on your book.

Think of this as your own literary DIY!

Some Examples:  How to Survive Grade 4; How to Graduate Hogwarts; How to Save the World, etc.

ü  Read the assignment and use the planner to get started.

Trading Cards

You can create a series of trading cards for the characters in your novel!

Creativity, Art and ELA together at last!

You can create your cards by hand, or you can use the resources provided below.

ü  Learn more about the assignment and see an example.

ü  Make sure you make a rough draft first.

ü  Create your cards online or using a ruler and paper.

Board Game

Who doesn’t love games?  This is your chance to create your very own board game around the theme of your novel.

ü  Check out the Assignment and the rubric.  Make sure the expectations are clear.

ü  Sketch out your concept and board

ü  Write your questions and have them proofread

ü  Get creating

ü  Share and play your game!

Bonus 1 – Compare and Contrast the Novel to a Movie Version

If your novel of choice has a movie made about it, you can watch the movie and compare and contrast the book and the movie!  Make sure you read the Book Vs. Movie Assignment questions FIRST so you can take some good notes while you watch.  Then you can come back and complete the assignment.

Bonus 2 – Write an Alternate Ending, Sequel, Modern Version, or Parody of the Play

Are you or someone you know unhappy with how the novel ends? Do you want to extend the story or modernize it, or make fun of it? If so, your challenge is to write an alternate ending, sequel to, modern version or parody of the novel.  Set up a time to conference with your teacher about your ideas before you get started.  This assignment could even be turned into a video.  This is an example of an Alternate Ending Planner.

Other Possibilities – Chat with your teacher about one of these other options.  Make sure you are both on the same page and agree on doing something else, and what your expectations are!

Design sets and costumes for your novel.

Create a diary for one of the characters.

Create novel related artwork.

Create a movie trailer for the novel, or a video to pitch turning the book into a movie.

Create a mock Facebook or Twitter account for one of the characters.
