Cube It! Activity:

Choose a topic or unit of study that the students are already familiar with. Have the students take turns rolling the dice. The student has to respond based on what they rolled.

Dot to Dot Stories activity:

The teacher puts students into groups of 4. From the four different colours of sticker dots, the students choose a sticker and put it on the back of their hand. The teachers gives instructions for each of the colours: “ All the blue dots think of a name of a character. Don’t say anything out loud.” Continue on with each colour giving them a different topic to think about. The group members now share their idea and create a story.

Headline Context acitivty/print out:

Teacher selects a photograph or picture from a magazine, newspaper, website, etc and posts the selection on a bulletin board. During the week, the students generate ideas for the headline, write them on paper and put them in the ballot box. At the end of the week, the ballot box and picture are given to another classroom for evaluation.

Human Bar Graph reading response activity:

Post three to five response options for students to choose based on their opinions. ( Highly Agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree, Strongly Disagree) Pose a question to the students and have them stand in front of the sign that best suits their opinion. Students should stand one behind the other to form a line in front of their sign.

Lapbooks activity:

Lapbooks are a creative and visual strategy for students to show what they know after reading a book or doing a learning experience. Lapbooks are folders filled with folding tabs that represent sub topics ( elements of a story, ecosystems, needs and wants, etc).

This is a tic tac toe style game that involves completing activities where you write "snap shots".

Taking Sides activity:

Create a long line of the floor of the classroom or open space. All students stand on the line. The teacher reads a statement. If students are neutral they stay on the line, if they disagree they step to the left, if they agree they step to the right. Students must justify their opinions when they move off the line.

TRIMS activity:

In this assignment students answer questions about title, relationship, introduction, main parts and summary of a text.

Auditory Formative Assessment:

The teacher asks a question or gives students a task such as “What do people need to do to prepare for an emergency?” Students respond on a sticky note or piece of paper. They stand up when they are done. The Teacher then randomly chooses a student and asks them to read one response from their sticky note. As students listen, they check off any items/answers that they also have on their sticky note. Students sit down after all of their items on their list are checked off.Teacher continues until all the students are seated.
