Blended Learning Unit for Exploring Our Universe

Over the past several years that I have taught Science 9, I always assigned a major
independent project to cover the outcomes in the Exploring Our Universe unit. Since this
unit is a favorite with my students, I began to integrate some instructional pieces above and
beyond their major projects, and ended up with a loose version of a blended learning unit.
Unlike the other units in Science 9, Exploring Our Universe lends itself well to blended
learning as the content can be easily comprehended by most students without lecture-style
teaching. Instead, students are provided with a range of instructional experiences, which
include small group work, computer-based learning, individual work areas, and teacherlead
small groups. Students have a choice for most activities, which means all the outcomes
will be covered, but the depth and areas of focus will vary from student to student. All
activities are self-pacing, and will receive either a formative or summative assessment
throughout the unit. As you will see, some activities work well as for both small group work
and individual work areas. We use Pearson Saskatchewan Science 9 as a textbook for this
unit

My Action Plan is related to Social Studies and the use of collaboration and critical thinking. I plan to evaluate the resources I am currently using in Social Studies and adjust or adapt them to move in the direction of collaboration, critical thinking, and technology.
This is an activity that involves technology, collaboration and critical thinking.

ELA 5- Persuasive Advertising Techniques
Unrestricted Use

In my Grade 5 ELA class, we are learning about the persuasive techniques that advertisers use to entice you to buy their products or use their services. We spent a few classes watching TV commercials and viewing print ads and identifying the persuasive techniques that the advertisers used. The students were then placed into small groups (2-3 people) and were asked to choose a product or service that they will try to sell. They were asked to create any props, backdrops, posters, etc. that would help to advertise their product or service. They also had to keep in mind that different target audiences will require different persuasive techniques. My goal for my 21st Century Competencies work is to learn how to use imovie and then teach the students so that they can create an actual TV commercial in order to advertise their product or service.

ELa 4-8: Expert Writing Presentations

I have been doing expert writing with the older students for a few years now as an independent English Language Arts project while I am working with the younger students. However, I have been disappointed with the variety and creativity in presentations. I give them a list of possible formats and they choose the topic they are interested in researching and how they want to present what they have learned. Only 1 or 2 have been brave enough to deviate from the traditional written report, or poster. My plan was to do a variety of creativity projects from the Destination Imagination series to foster creativity and get them in the right frame of mind before doing their projects. I insisted that they had to choose a format other than a written report, or poster.

During this assignment the students have a choice of a final project to
demonstrate their understanding of sound. The student may choose to:
• create a musical instrument out of recycled materials which plays at least
3 different pitches
• use materials to create sound effects to enhance a poem or story
While doing this assignment the students enhance their critical thinking and
creativity skills as they use what they know to solve a problem to create
something new. The live theatre presentation section of this assignment and the
rubric were borrow from the Sun West Distance Learning course for Grade 4
Science.
