Saskatchewan Historic Places Discovery Hunt

Saskatchewan Historic Places Discovery Hunt from the Government of Saskatchewan

"Using the outcomes and indicators identified in the Social Studies curriculum for grade 3-5 students, we developed a series of question sets, called Saskatchewan Historic Places Discovery Hunt, on the topics of immigration, Indigenous history, resource and economic development, prominent people and events in the province’s history, and governing Saskatchewan, among others. Using an inquiry-based approach, the questions are designed to guide students to a Saskatchewan listing on the Register where they can quickly, and without a great amount of critical thinking, learn an interesting fact about the property.  In this way, the questions can be easily answered with limited teacher or parental/ guardian support, while promoting skills in using the Register and exposing the students to the diverse range of historic places that can be found across the province.  For those students who want to learn more, each property listing contains write-ups about their history and the reasons why they were designated.  Students can also search the Register to learn about other historic places in Saskatchewan and across Canada, or use this information to inspire their own research of a historic place, such as an older building in their community or a house where a family member lived.

I hope you will share the attached information with the appropriate teachers in your division.  It consists of:

·       Nine question sets (fillable PDFs for easy use);

·       Answer keys and an illustrated instruction manual to show students and teachers how to search the Canadian Register; and

·       Teacher information that includes Q&As and suggested additional assignments that teachers may wish to use to further engage students in researching the Canadian Register of Heritage Property or historic places in Saskatchewan.

Thank you for your consideration. If you or your teachers have any questions or comments, please reach out via email at historicplaces@gov.sk.ca. "
