Circumscribed rectangle, bounding box. (Coordinate Geometry)

An interactive applet and associated web page that show the definition and properties of the bounding box of a polygon or set of points. The bounding box is used in other entries to find area using the so-called box method. The grid, coordinates and calculations can be turned on and off for class problem solving. The applet can be printed in the state it appears on the screen to make handouts. The web page has a full definition of a bounding box when the coordinates of the points defining it are known, and has links to other pages relating to coordinate geometry and a worked example. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This resource is a component of the Math Open Reference Interactive Geometry textbook project at http://www.mathopenref.com.

Classic Slide Rule

In this activity, students construct classic slide rules and use them like calculators. Students use the slide rules to read scales, determine significant figures, and estimate decimal places.åÊ This is activity D3 in the "Far Out Math" educator's guide. Lessons in the guide include activities in which students measure, compare quantities as orders of magnitude, become familiar with scientific notation, and develop an understanding of exponents and logarithms using examples from NASA's GLAST mission. These are skills needed to understand the very large and very small quantities characteristic of astronomical observations. Note: In 2008, GLAST was renamed Fermi, for the physicist Enrico Fermi.

The Climate Skeptic's Argument: Natural Solar Cycles or Human Activity?

In this self-paced tutorial, learners analyze data to understand the relative influence of solar variability on today's climate to determine whether changes in incoming solar radiation can explain all or part of the warming trend we have seen in Earth's planetary temperatures. The resource supports teacher reflection on how climate change skepticism in the media impacts instruction in the classroom. Multimedia educational resources including video clips and data portals are included. This is the fourth of ten self-paced professional development modules providing opportunities for teachers to learn about climate change through first-hand data exploration. Glossary links to vocabulary are included.

Club Function

Students explore the definition of a function by playing an interactive game called "Club Function." The goal of the game is to be in the club! With students each assigned to be either a zebra or a rhinoceros, they group themselves according to the "rules" of the club function. After two minutes, students freeze in their groups, and if they are not correctly following the rules of the club function, then they are not allowed into the "club." Through this activity students come to understand that one x-coordinate can only have one corresponding y-coordinate while y-coordinates can have many x-coordinates that correspond to it.

n this task, students are able to conjecture about the differences in the two groups from a strictly visual perspective and then support their comparisons with appropriate measures of center and variability. This will reinforce that much can be gleaned simply from visual comparison of appropraite graphs, particularly those of similar scale. Students are also encouraged to consider how certain measurements and observation values from one group compare in the context of the other group.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the concept of collinear points. Four draggable points are shown. Dragging any one of them will cause the others to move so they are always collinear. A button controls the line that can be drawn through them. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. The purpose of this task is to help students understand the connection between counting and cardinality. Thus, oral counting and recording the number in digit form are the most important aspects of this activity. However, teachers can extend this by making a bar graph about how many students are wearing the color each day.

In the first part of this video introduction to combinatorics, we introduce factorial notation to efficiently describe the ways we can arrange distinguishable objects in a row. Next, we count the combinations of L objects that can be grabbed from a container of L + N total objects. Finally, we use the formula for combinations to derive the binomial theorem.

The primary purpose of this problem is to rewrite simple rational expressions in different forms to exhibit different aspects of the expression, in the context of a relevant real-world context (the fuel efficiency of of a car). Indeed, the given form of the combined fuel economy computation is useful for direct calculation, but if asked for an approximation, is not particularly helpful.
