This video explores the return of buffalo through First Nations sharing and gifts. This is a great resource when exploring Indigenous agriculture and the impact of settlement on Indigenous agriculture.

Students explore the effects of regional geology on bridge foundation, including the variety of soil conditions found beneath foundations. They learn about shallow and deep foundations, as well as the concepts of bearing pressure and settlement.

This production is a stop animation video that depicts the history of land settlement in western Canada in the 1800s. The entire video was written and produced by my grade 3/4 students at Lucky Lake School. We studied the history, then they created the storyboard and wrote the script. All of the scenes were flimed with iPads on three different sets with students in the shop. I did the editing and added the sound and their prerecorded narration. All of the props where hand made from scratch or recycled materials. The entire project took one month to complete.

This is an excellent example of Project Based Learning in action!

Outcomes:
The assignment focused on early Saskatchewan architecture.
DR4.1 discusses lifestyles and settlement patterns of the people of
Saskatchewan. It also looks at the styles, materials, and cultural
traditions in architecture.

Summary of plan for integrating creativity into my classroom this
year:
- My goal was to implement creativity in the form of a building
project in my Grade 4-6 Social class. We are focusing on
Saskatchewan. As a wrap up to Chapter 1 I had the students
build a model of a pioneer house. When focusing on how
geography can influence lifestyle choices, we looked at the
architecture of the past.

Students investigate the critical nature of foundations as they learn differences between shallow and deep foundations, including the concepts of bearing pressure and settlement. Using models representing a shallow foundation and a deep pile foundation, they test, see and feel the effects in a cardboard box test bed composed of layers of pebbles, soil and sand. They also make bearing pressure calculations and recommendations for which type of foundations to use in various engineering scenarios.
