Uncertainty propagation: Quadrature

The quadrature formula relates the fluctuations of a function to fluctuations in the variables on which the function depends. In this derivation, we approximate a multivariable function using a Taylor expansion, and we assume that fluctuations in the underlying variables are statistically independent, which allows us to apply an identity previously derived in the unit on statistics. Namely, "variances of sums are sums of variances" for variables that fluctuate independently.

In the first video segment, we estimate properties of a parent distribution (i.e. mean and standard deviation) from a sample of a finite collection of data measurements, and we describe the standard error (SE). In the second segment, we derive the famous square-root of n factor that appears in the SE formula. The third video segment describes the visual comparison of error bars, and the fourth segment warns against a mistake that can generate inappropriate claims of statistical significance during this kind of analysis.

A web page and interactive applet illustrating the properties of an undecagon (11 sided polygon). The applet shows an undecagon where the user can drag any vertex to reshape it. User can see that the interior and exterior angles are constant in a regular undecagon, but vary in an irregular version. Controls allow the display or hiding of the diagonals, and triangles within the undecagon. The web page lists the properties of the undecagon including interior angles, exterior angles, sum of exterior angles, area, number of diagonals and number of internal triangles. Links to pages with generalized properties of all polygons. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This is a set of three, one-page problems about the sizes of moons in the solar system. Learners will use decimals to compare the sizes and distances of Saturn's moons to the center of Saturn. Options are presented so that students may learn about the Cassini mission through a NASA press release or by viewing a NASA eClips video [4 min.] about these and other moons in our solar system.
