Graphing Equations on the Cartesian Plane: Slope

Students learn about an important characteristic of lines: their slopes. Slope can be determined either in graphical or algebraic form. Slope can also be described as positive, negative, zero or undefined. Students get an explanation of when and how these different types of slope occur. Finally, they learn how slope relates to parallel and perpendicular lines. When two lines are parallel, they have the same slope and when they are perpendicular their slopes are negative reciprocals of one another.

-students will be handed out a review sheet on measuring angles, perpendicular lines, parallel lines and angle bisectors. (10 mins)

Body
-Students will be instructed to use popsicle sticks and marshmallows to construct a building. They are to ensure that some walls will be perpendicular to each other as well as parallel along with the roof. An expectation is that the building will be symmetrical and all angles on each side will be equal to the other side. (30 mins)

As you drag the end points of the line segments a message and the right-angle mark at the intersection tell if it is currently perpendicular. The goal is to show what a right angle 'looks like'. An interactive applet and associated web page that show how to determine of one line is perpendicular to another in coordinate geometry. The principle used is that if two lines a re perpendicular to each other the slope of one is the negative reciprocal of the other. The applet shows to lines that the user can move. The slopes are continuously calculated as you drag them, and if the they are parallel they change color. The calculation is shown on screen updated continuously as you drag. The grid, axis pointers and coordinates can be turned on and off. The calculation display can be turned off to permit class exercises and then turned back on the verify the answers. The applet can be printed as it appears on the screen to make handouts. The web page has a full description of the concept of perpendicularity, a worked example and has links to other pages relating to coordinate geometry. One of the exciting challenges for engineers is the idea of exploration. This lesson looks more closely at Spaceman Rohan, Spacewoman Tess, their daughter Maya, and their challenges with getting to space, setting up satellites, and exploring uncharted waters via a canoe. This lesson reinforces rockets as a vehicle that helps us explore outside the Earth's atmosphere (i.e., to move without air) by using the principles of Newton's third law of motion. Also, the ideas of thrust, control and weight all principles that engineers deal with when building a rocket are introduced.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the transversal, a line that crosses two other (usually parallel) lines. The applet shows two lines that are initially parallel, and a transversal line. All eight angles thus formed are shown. As you drag the transversal end points, you can see that the angles form congruent, supplementary and complementary sets. If you move one of the parallel lines to make it non-parallel, you can see that these angles lose some of their relationship with each other. Prepared with pre-algebra or algebra 1 classes in mind, this module leads students through the process of graphing data and finding a line of best fit while exploring the characteristics of linear equations in algebraic and graphic formats. Then, these topics are connected to real-world experiences in which people use linear functions. During the module, students use these scientific concepts to solve the following hypothetical challenge: You are a new researcher in a lab, and your boss has just given you your first task to analyze a set of data. It being your first assignment, you ask an undergraduate student working in your lab to help you figure it out. She responds that you must determine what the data represents and then find an equation that models the data. You believe that you will be able to determine what the data represents on your own, but you ask for further help modeling the data. In response, she says she is not completely sure how to do it, but gives a list of equations that may fit the data. This module is built around the legacy cycle, a format that incorporates educational research feindings on how people best learn.
