Human beings all over the world are in the middle of a technological revolution, the likes of which have not been seen since the industrial revolution. New inventions are being created daily with varying degrees of success. However, we are also dependent on many inventions that may not be new, but are imperative for our daily lives. In this lesson, students will choose one invention and create an inquiry poster, explaining its significance.

The following resource includes "I Can Statements" that students should be able to achieve at the end of ELA 20.

This assignment is intended to display your understanding of the novel that you have chosen. Written work should be typed (12pt font) and double-spaced. You will have some class time to work on this assignment, but it is sometimes difficult to book computer time that will accommodate our schedule. Please plan ahead. You may choose a book from any of the senior ELA sections, but I would prefer if you tried to find a novel in the ELA 20 section before looking elsewhere.

Practice using the viewing guide with one or two videos first, following the lesson steps below. This may be done every second or third day. Once students feel comfortable with the viewing process, a summative viewing guide can be completed by the students for grading.

We can choose our friends but, like it or not, we are born into families and we must, for the most part, manage with those with whom we find ourselves. Every culture has its stories. Long ago, before people invented writing, stories about important beliefs, deities, heroes, and experiences were told and retold. The best of these were passed by word-of-mouth from one generation to the next to form an important part of our heritage. Some early stories were told in the form of poems, others in the form of songs, and others in the form of what we now call tales or narratives.

Each of these stories has something important to tell and teach us. The main characters challenge us to explore the complexity and fragility of being human. They force us to examine our relationships with others and our environment, our many faces of virtue and our human failings. They force us to relate the values, behaviours, and attitudes of the characters in the narrative to our own personalities and our own lives. Many of the stories are tales that give us a window into the values, beliefs, and practices of people past and present.

These narratives not only teach and entertain but also make us think about the big questions regarding human nature and the meaning of life that have confronted humankind through the ages.

Students between the ages of 12-16 are changing in every conceivable way. They are discovering who they are and what they value. This makes the years of early adolescence the ideal time to support students’ growing moral consciousness through units of study that challenge them to identify, discuss, and address significant societal issues. The resource attached includes an assignment about "All That I Am".

Whether at home, in school, or in society, we all face conflicts, challenges, and issues. Although these conflicts, challenges, and issues develop for many different reasons, they force us to make choices if we are to do the right thing. Doing the right thing is always a challenge. Is it better to do the right thing and fail or do the wrong thing and succeed? By considering how others have dealt with similar conflicts, challenges, and issues, we can learn how to do the right thing. By reflecting on the conflicts, challenges, and issues and the choices that we have, we can face and address life and the world around us.
