This task asks the students to solve a real-world problem involving unit rates (data per unit time) using units that many teens and pre-teens have heard of but may not know the definition for. While the computations involved are not particularly complex, the units will be abstract for many students.

Database Management Systems is the software that allows us to create and use a database. This video looks at the DBMS, their functions, some examples of popular software solutions and a quick look at Structured Query Language (SQL)

The database management software is the program used to create and mange the database. The database model is the architecture the DBMS used to store objects within that database.

On the leading edge of agricultural technology, young farmers are using data to minimize costs and improve yields while protecting their soil and water.

This lesson incorporates sea surface data collected by NASA satellites. Data for three surface characteristics- height, temperature and speed- are used for several activities. Students examine the differences in speed of currents relative to distance from the Equator. Sea surface data anomalies are charted and further analyzed. In addition, surface current data is presented to examine patterns related to El Ni̱o. Note that this is lesson three of five on the Ocean Motion website. Each lesson investigates ocean surface circulation using satellite and model data and can be done independently. The students at Riverside Elementary School are excited about a visit from a real author. The class has been reading books by the author to get ready for her visit. No one was as excited as Eddie.

This lesson introduces the concept of cause and effect with Trinka Hakes Noble's books about Jimmy and his boa constrictor. Each lesson begins with the teacher reading a new story about Jimmy and his boa and the chaos they bring to each place they visit. Class discussions about each event and its cause are followed by tasks for the students to help illustrate understanding of the concept. Students create cause-and-effect pictures, puzzles, and flow charts as they explore the genre. As a culminating activity, students write their own book with causes and effects, which are assessed with a rubric.

As an opportunity to bring technology into the classroom, I chose to take my students on a virtual field trip to the San Diego Zoo. It was a fun way to review some of the learning that we did in the fall. It also allowed me to introduce a new way of experiencing the zoo and a field trip to the students. We used several of the zoo’s live cameras, and actually observed the animals, and then used the videos and web pages to discuss mammals, amphibians, birds, arthropods, and reptiles. Students had a snack, and brought a stuffed animal that they used to share the type of animal, the interactions with humans, and the life cycle as well as the habitat and diet of their animal.

Students explore the many different ways that engineers provide natural lighting to interior spaces. They analyze various methods of daylighting by constructing model houses from foam core board and simulating the sun with a desk lamp. Teams design a daylighting system for their model houses based on their observations and calculations of the optimal use of available sunlight to their structure.
