Summary: This year my students created a concept map to summarize their learning in the science unit of
animal adaptations and classification. I created a list of terms and concepts that students must have on
their map, and offered opportunities for students to add their own knowledge. Prior to the assignment
the students and I created an assessment rubric to evaluate their learning.

Archaeology Lesson: Artifact for 21st Century Education

Students working collaboratively on a mini-archaeology dig to locate and identify artifacts, create hypotheses about the objects and what information they tell us about a society, and research past artifacts to determine if their hypotheses were correct. Students had to use collaboration when working on the dig, when creating their hypotheses, when measuring the artifacts, and when forming conclusions. Additionally, students had to use critical thinking when formulating theories, researching and reviewing data online, assessing their ideas, analyzing and comparing their hypotheses with archaeology studies online, and when justifying their hypotheses (and proving them) with the artifact data they discovered online, and forming conclusions.

Arctic Peoples and Archaelogy

Originally conceived of as a curriculum resource for Nunavut schools, this comprehensive interactive presentation provides an excellent introduction to the arctic, and to the people who made this environment their home for the past thousands of years.

The presentation begins by introducing the arctic environment. An interactive migration activity concludes this first section, encouraging the student to consider the challenges of a family at the turn of a season as they decide where to travel next to find the sustenance on which their lives depend. The next section introduces the arctic peoples, their tools, shelters, and their modes of transportation.

The third section introduces the science of archaeology along with the regulatory environment for accessing archaeology sites in Nunavut today. The final section focuses on a rich archaeological site in the High Arctic. This section is also interactive, requiring the student’s assistance to identify objects and make decisions about the Tuniit and the Thule who were known to have occupied this site.

Arithmetic Operations: Adding Decimals Example 1

You get the general idea of decimal is and what the digits in different places represent (place value). Now you're ready to do something with the decimals. Adding and subtracting is a good place to start. This will allow you to add your family's expenses to figure out if your little brother is laundering money (perhaps literally). Have fun! Arithmetic Operations: Multiplying Decimals 1

The real world is seldom about whole numbers. If you precisely measure anything, you're likely to get a decimal. If you don't know how to multiply these decimals, then you won't be able to do all the powerful things that multiplication can do in the real world (figure out your commission as a robot possum salesperson, determining how much shag carpet you need for your secret lair, etc.).
