The purpose of the video lesson is to explore the complete sentences, compound sentences, sentence fragments and run-on sentences. The accompanying handout provides practice on identifying and correcting sentence fragments.

Madeline Noonan meets with all of her students individually during writer's workshop. In each conference, she specifically identifies strengths and two goals. Students continue to revise and rewrite throughout the workshop process and build confidence in their writing at the same time.

Use a variety of mentor texts to have students practice skills, and to explicitly teach them how to use the techniques examined including:

Building compound sentences with coordinating conjunctions
Varying sentence length
Using transitions to connect ideas

In 2022, two collaborative groups of Australian educators formed to create Syntax & Punctuation and Morphology resources.

These resources are available for free to promote a culture of sharing and collaboration amongst schools.

The lessons can be edited and adapted to reflect the topics & curriculum content taught in your classroom.
