My goal was to have grade 5-8 students incorporate critical thinking in their reader response journals, where they respond to text read independently during Guided Reading stations. I feel reader response journals encourage students to apply strategies taught in class when reading independently to improve their understanding of a variety of text. Our SLIP goal for the past two years focused on reading strategies, so I was also trying to build on the work we were doing for the West Colony PLT.

This guided Grade 6 ELA unit covers the Peace and Conflict theme. This station rotation resource includes setup, assignments, and assessments for a 6-7 week ELA unit.

Materials and strategies to assist with the instructional approach of working with a small group of students who demonstrate similar reading behaviours.

You can use these prompts with your students while they are reading to focus direction on your teaching point. It is suggested that you go after one concept/teaching point per lesson and focus all of your prompts around that concept. For example - fluency or meaning.
