CELLS alive! represents 30 years of capturing film and computer-enhanced images of living cells and organisms for education and medical research. The site has been available continuously and updated annually since May of 1994 and now hosts over 4 million visitors a year. All text, images, and layout are provided by me, Jim Sullivan. Every effort has been made to minimize errors or typos, but any you find on these pages are my doing as well.

The majority of the site is free of cost and registration for anyone with internet access. With up to 45,000 visitors a day during the school year, hosting costs are an issue. Students and teachers who purchase downloads for classroom use make this possible.

We provide dozens of classroom activities and teacher resources, each of which are paired with an online quiz that students can take on their laptop, tablet, or phone. This two-pronged lesson approach enables teachers to tailor a classroom experience that is supplemented by a fun and interactive experience for the student. Our online quizzes have been developed by health and education professionals, as well as communication experts who have studied the online behaviour of students – as such, they are accurate, informative, but also engaging for the student.

Students learn how viruses invade host cells and hijack the hosts' cell-reproduction mechanisms in order to make new viruses, which can in turn attack additional host cells. Students also learn how the immune system responds to a viral invasion, eventually defeating the viruses -- if all goes well. Finally, they consider the special case of HIV, in which the virus' host cell is a key component of the immune system itself, severely crippling it and ultimately leading to AIDS. The associated activity, Tracking a Virus, sets the stage for this lesson with a dramatic simulation that allows students to see for themselves how quickly a virus can spread through a population, and then challenges students to determine who the initial bearers of the virus were.
