ANTICIPATION GUIDE - Learning Strategy
Rating

This is an individual strategy in which students are presented with a list of statements that are related to the topic(s) presented in a text/video that will be read or viewed. While some of the statements may be clearly true or false, a good anticipation guide includes statements that provoke disagreement and challenge students’ beliefs about the topic. Includes student graphic organizer.

Why use it?
- To access and activate prior knowledge of the topic of a piece of written text or video
- To introduce a new topic from reading an article on the topic or viewing a video
- To build a student’s personal interest in the subject he/she will be reading about or seeing
- To establish a purpose for reading text/viewing a video (students read to gather information that will either confirm or dispute their initial beliefs and cause them to rethink their beliefs)
- To develop critical-thinking skills

Rating

This magazine was created by young artists and others who are interested in preventing alcohol-related harms. The articles and art within can be used as starting point for talking about the role of alcohol in the lives of young people and society. It can be downloaded or ordered from the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute's website.

Hammered: After Party was developed as part of the Youth Action for Prevention, a youth-focused FASD prevention program. The articles and art in this magazine can be used to start conversations about the role of alcohol in the lives of young people and society. All Fat Is Not Created Equally!
Conditions of Use:
Read the Fine Print
Rating

Students learn that fats found in the foods we eat are not all the same; they discover that physical properties of materials are related to their chemical structures. Provided with several samples of commonly used fats with different chemical properties (olive oil, vegetable oil, shortening, animal fat and butter), student groups build and use simple LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) NXT robots with temperature and light sensors to determine the melting points of the fat samples. Because of their different chemical structures, these fats exhibit different physical properties, such as melting point and color. This activity uses the fact that fats are opaque when solid and translucent when liquid to determine the melting point of each sample upon being heated. Students heat the samples, and use the robot to determine when samples are melted. They analyze plots of their collected data to compare melting points of the oil samples to look for trends. Discrepancies are correlated to differences in the chemical structure and composition of the fats.
