Getting Started...Read this First...

We all know there is no such thing as an average student.  In order for our students to do their best learning, we need to know who they are (build relationships) and how they learn best.  The information in the Learner Profile can be used throughout the year to ensure you know your students, and even more importantly - they know themselves and how they learn best.

What Should Definitely Be Included?

  • Strengths, areas for growth
  • Interests, hobbies, talents, passions
  • Goals/aspirations
  • Family (think beyond traditional view of family - who is important in this child's life?)
  • Personality (such as True Color, Psychogeometric, Myers Briggs, Four Tendancies)
  • Learning Style (such as visual, auditory, kineshetic, VARK, Felder)
  • 21st Century Competency inventory or snapshot (SECRET inventory 7C rubrics)

What Could Also Be Included?

Remember, the more pieces of information you gather about a student, the better understanding you will have about them, and they will have about themselves.

  • Multiple Intelligences
  • Career Inventories
  • GRIT Scales or Inventories
  • Growth Mindset
  • Self-Regulation Rubric
  • Love Languages
  • Creativity Type
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Wellness Inventory
  • Other

Possible resources will be organized by grade grouping below.  As will all things, examine those avaiable to you, and select the resource you feel best suits your needs and your students' needs.  Be flexible.  Perhaps a better resource for you is actually listed in a different grade grouping.  Revisit the profiles every year, as results can often change as students mature and are influenced by their teachers.  Consider using new inventories each year/grade to keep things interesting.

As you browse, make a plan.  Select the inventories and resources you'd like to use.  Remember if you click "Save" on a resource, you can create a folder and save resources too it in The Resource Bank.  This way the resources you love will be easy to find under "My Items" in the top right hand corner.

Contact your school's PeBL mentor if you have any further questions, or you do not find resources you'd like to use.  They have access to other resources beyond those listed here as well via the PeBL Mentor OneNote.

It's important that Learner Profiles are not just completed in September and then put away for the rest of the year.  They should be revisited often, and worked into goal setting, planning and reflection all year long.  Make sure you visit the last section entitled "Now What?" to find plenty of ideas to keep using Learner Proflies all year long!

Remember you have access to the entire Learner Profile Collection in the Resource Bank as well here https://resourcebank.ca/curated-collections/35.

How to Build a Learner Profile

You are only as limited as your imagination when it comes to how you wish to share information about the students' in their profiles.

You can build them on paper, using graphics software such a Genially, make PPTs, flipbooks and more!  Get creative here.  Whatever format you choose, please make sure it's easy to pull the profiles when you conference with a student.  They should be looked at regularly when conferencing, setting goals, making work plans, reflecting, etc.  These are not a "one and done" assignment.

Here are some quick ideas below:

Now What?

As mentioned earlier, Learner Proflies are not a "one and done" type of activity.  You want to revisit the information in the profiles regularly to help make good learning decisions together and reflect.

The following list contains a variety of ideas for how you can continue to use Learner Profiles all year long.
