Science Fair Projects- Grade 6./7
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

This artifact demonstrates the development of creativity in my classroom because it required all students to choose an area that interested them and investigate it further by creating their own experiment, using an idea and extending on it from the internet, or researching a topic. Students could choose whatever topic they wanted to. The requirements included following proper scientific methods when designing an experiment or studying a topic. Thus, this did not fall into a particular outcome, rather it was extra practice in developing the scientific method, which is focused on in every Unit of study.

During this assignment the students have a choice of a final project to
demonstrate their understanding of sound. The student may choose to:
• create a musical instrument out of recycled materials which plays at least
3 different pitches
• use materials to create sound effects to enhance a poem or story
While doing this assignment the students enhance their critical thinking and
creativity skills as they use what they know to solve a problem to create
something new. The live theatre presentation section of this assignment and the
rubric were borrow from the Sun West Distance Learning course for Grade 4
Science.

Script Writing and Video Production

I collaborated with the computer/visual arts teacher to design a social and computer/visual arts assignment. Our focus was to encourage creativity and give students an opportunity for collaboration. Creativity occurred in all stages of the process. Students had to be creative in the planning stages. They were given the task to choose a common children’s fairy tale and come up with ideas on how to make it a parody. They then had to write their own scripts together which takes an immense amount of creativity to create something entirely from one’s imagination. Because it was a humour unit, they were also tasked with coming up with elements of humour both non-verbal and verbal whether it be witty, dark, silly etc. Finally, they then filmed their scripts either on a green screen or a shadow screen which takes creativity not only to create the video but by learning how to adapt one’s vision into something more realistic.

SeeSaw in a Multi-Grade Classroom
Unrestricted Use

SeeSaw is an app that allows students to have a blog within our classroom. We use it as a communication tool for parents and online portfolio in Kindergarten. I created learning folders to be used for assessing learning outcomes. In Grade One students use their ipads to take pictures of their school work. They decide what items they want to be posted on their blog. They also practice writing on the note pad and drawing through the drawing portion of the app. I also document grade one learning on SeeSaw.

Semi-truck and trailer unit

The semitruck and trailer is what I would call a simple project. This is a project that student
could make in their 1st year of IA in grade 7 or 8, (I have had grade 12 students make the truck
and A or B-train.) When the students are making their project they are demonstrating to me that they have understood and follow the safety for each of the machines available using. In Mr.
Kurulak’s class you must watch the safety presentation/demo for each machine, and then write a safety exam for that machine earning at least an 80% on the 1st try, if the student does not pass it on the 1st try they must get 100% correct on any rewrites, whatever Mark they get on their 1st exam is what I count towards their report card marks, as I’m assuming at that point I am expecting you know that information.

The task was for the students to design a pillow, create their own patterns, and then sew the pieces together accordingly. Students then self evaluated their pillows and reflected on what they could have done to improve. Part of the assessment was class time used as well. Some of the projects turned out
incredible. You try to encourage them to pick designs that are both difficult enough, as well as not too difficult.

Summary
For my artifact, I incorporated the multiple intelligences and creativity in the
post-assignments for The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson. Before reading the novel, I
had students take the multiple intelligences test
at http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks3/ict/multiple_int/ind
ex.htm After this, students had a better understanding of their strengths in the
different intelligences. From here, I introduced some of the projects to the students
and I got input from them about possible projects that we could do which would fit
under the various intelligences. I made it mandatory that students choose three
projects, each from a different intelligence. I suggested that they choose assignments
from the categories in which they scored highly on the multiple intelligences test, but
I left the final decision up to them which assignments they would ultimately choose. I
made sure to give students the assignment details before reading the novel, so in that
way they were able to read with a purpose, keeping the requirements of the
assignment in mind.

Snow/Igloo Project Pre-K
Unrestricted Use

For this project, I began by creating a web about "Snow" and where I thought the topic could lead to with the students. Next I started a "Snow" web with the students and had them tell me all that they knew about snow. After that we came up with some questions about snow and what we wanted to learn. From there, I provided some invitations for the students in the classroom to explore and learn from.

This resource evolves from there; from discussing what we can do to stay warm in winter, learning poems and songs, reading books, doing gross and fine motor activities before finally building an igloo.

Social Experience Blogging is an assignment that can provide students an
opportunity to express themselves while thinking about social experiences or
situations that they have been involved in. With Psychology 20 focusing on
the world of social psychology, it is important for students to reflect upon their
lives and look at the world with their own personal scope. This provides
students with a chance to customize blogs to their own liking and have a
vehicle for personal expression.

Social Studies 2: Community Collaboration Using iPad/iMovie
Unrestricted Use

The three Grade 2 classes at OES were divided into small groups, to produce a video of the services offered by the Jim Kook Recreation Complex in Outlook, Sk. Each group was given an area of the recplex that provides a recreational service to the community. These included curling rink, bowling alley, archery, etc. Students began with an activity to describe their specific area. Teachers had provided a screen shot within each area for eatery student. Students were then given the opportunity to practice taking video with the iPad. The next step was to visit the recplex and have each child video their specific screen shot. This was planned around an afternoon of Bowling and Skating for the Grade Two students. Each group was pulled from their activity to shoot their video. At a later date, students were given the opportunity to edit and voice over their video footage. This worked well when all the students were doing an art activity with one teacher, and the other two teachers were able to pull the students in small groups to do the editing.
