This collection of lesson plans investigates ways artists address political and social issues through their
practice. By carefully examining three works of art from the Chazen’s collection, students will be able
to consider what activism is and how it relates to them and their community. The artwork used in the
curriculum ranges from photographs of schoolchildren exploring their use of language (Ewald) to a
silhouette narrative examining our nation’s fraught history with racism (Walker). The artwork is diverse
in medium, subject, tone, and message. However, several universal themes are present.

• Considering issues of representation
• Bringing awareness to social and political issues

Students apply the analytical skills that they use when reading literature to an exploration of the underlying meaning and symbolism in Hieronymous BoschŐs early Renaissance painting "Death and the Miser".

Unit
overview

The unit will have students create a photographic
journal consisting of 15 to 30 photographs. Accompanying the photographic
journal will be a written journal. Students will choose a subject, prepare an
outline and then spend 5-10 days documenting the subject. Students will write a
brief synopsis for each photo taken and end the unit with a presentation
(physical or digital) of their work.

Elements of Art are the visual "tools" that artists use to create an art work - they are what makes up an image or an art object: line, shape/form, value, color, space, and texture.

Principles of Design are the ways artists use the Elements of Art in an artwork - this is "what we do with the Elements" - how we arrange them, how we balance them, what is being emphasized, etc. The principles are: balance, contrast, repetition, emphasis, and unity.

Semester 1
Focus on drawing skills:

Semester 2
Focus on drawing, painting and printing media:
unusual painting media, creative designs - practice eye-hand coordination, pen and ink drawings, pattern values and creative application, introduction to silk screen printing, optical illusions and OpArt - review perspective, collages and acrylic paintings, composition and colors in Art.

Students will analyze scenes from the Trojan War that are visually depicted in an ancient object and an 18th-century painting. They will research an epic poem inspired by the Trojan War and write a literary response analyzing how themes and values in the poem reflect the historical context in which they were made. Finally, they will work in teams to reframe a tale from the Trojan War in a contemporary context -- visually and in poetry -- and recite the tale in a poetry slam.

Art can be a platform for social change because it reaches deep into our souls and speaks a visceral language we all understand.

Art serving as a tool for social activism or social healing is not new, but as art educators, we need to be reminded of this.
