Figuring Out Fluency – Operations With Rational Numbers and Algebraic Equations
Rating
0.0 stars

This site offers 4 free math activities to assist students with increasing their fluency in operations with rational number and algebraic equations. The activities include:
Activity 7.7: "Would You Rather..." Routine
There are two versions of this routine with systems of linear equations—choosing different strategies (e.g., Use Tables or Use Graphs) and making choices within a strategy (e.g., For which variable will I substitute? Or Which variables will I eliminate?).
Activity 6.10: The Transformer Game
This game is a fun way to give students opportunities to choose and use different basic transformations to start solving equations.
Activity 5.7: Worked Examples For Ratios and Proportions
Use this activity for worked examples for ratios and proportions. Correctly worked examples and partially solved worked examples benefit students so that they can understand strategy.
ACTIVITY 4.11: Quotient Connect Game
This game is an engaging way to practice division using Partial Quotients. It is played similarly to the classic board game Boggle as students find quotients through connected digits.

Focusing on the Fundamentals of Math K-8 - From ON
Rating
0.0 stars

"This guide is intended to support teachers’ ongoing efforts in building students’ knowledge and skills in mathematics. It focuses attention on the content of expectations in The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1–8: Mathematics, 2005 that deal with fundamental mathematics concepts and skills (specifically, expectations in the Number Sense and Numeration strand and expectations that relate to number properties in the Patterning and Algebra strand). The guide outlines steps to achieving the knowledge and skills described in these expectations and suggests how to make more timely connections that will better support student learning. A strong foundation in the concepts and skills emphasized here will prepare students for success in high school, and ensure that they have a set of essential skills for employment and responsible citizenship in the future."

There are excellent charts included that organize foundational skills by grade grouping. These charts start on page 5.

Students must think about the factors of each number as they play this game. Students quickly learn the value of selecting prime numbers as a strategy. The beauty of the game design is that students will review the factors of many numbers and mentally add the sum of these factors together in search of the "best move."

Math Practice at Your Fingertips

My goal for this year was to add math games to my repertoire of teaching strategies as part of my regular classroom routine. I looked at this as the first step to moving towards a guided math program. Also our PLT group was working on ways to increase the level of math fact knowledge in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The Saskatchewan Curriculum recognizes that “mental mathematics is a combination of cognitive strategies that enhance flexible thinking and number sense. It is calculating mentally and reasoning about the relative size of quantities without the use of external memory aids. Mental mathematics enables students to determine answers and propose strategies without paper and pencil. It improves computational fluency and problem solving by developing efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility.” I also wanted to increase opportunities for communication and collaboration. Some of my math games involved building, creating and problem solving. Others involved competition and cooperation. I created a brochure that highlighted the favorite games of the students and it also provides links where teachers can find these games.
