Students are challenged to design a method for separating steel from aluminum based on magnetic properties as is frequently done in recycling operations. To complicate the challenge, the magnet used to separate the steel must be able to be switched off to allow for the recollection of the steel. Students must ultimately design, test, and present an effective electromagnet.

In the everyday electrical devices we use calculators, remote controls and cell phones a voltage source such as a battery is required to close the circuit and operate the device. In this hands-on activity, students use batteries, wires, small light bulbs and light bulb holders to learn the difference between an open circuit and a closed circuit, and understand that electric current only occurs in a closed circuit.

Students design, build and test reflectors to measure the effect of solar reflectance on the efficiency of solar PV panels. They use a small PV panel, a multimeter, cardboard and foil to build and test their reflectors in preparation for a class competition. Then they graph and discuss their results with the class. Complete this activity as part of the Photovoltaic Efficiency unit and in conjunction with the Concentrated Solar Power lesson.

The grand challenge for this legacy cycle unit is for students to design a way to help a recycler separate aluminum from steel scrap metal. In previous lessons, they have looked at how magnetism might be utilized. In this lesson, students think about how they might use magnets and how they might confront the problem of turning the magnetic field off. Through the accompanying activity students explore the nature of an electrically induced magnetic field and its applicability to the needed magnet.

This resource provides ways for students to inquire and explore a variety of topics when it comes to producing power, delivering it, conserving it and the ethical, social and environmental considerations that go along with it. As students learn what goes into powering a province, it is hoped that they will also begin a journey of discovering the value of electricity in their lives and the role they can play to use less of it.
This resource was developed to provide teachers with the most up‐to‐date information on electricity in Saskatchewan. As the electrical industry is constantly evolving and regulations and innovations influence new directions, it's important that teachers have current information to share with students.
As much as possible, teachers are forwarded to the SaskPower website as that will have the most current content. Student handouts will be updated annually, but if there is a discrepancy between the printed copy and the website, please defer to the content on saskpower.com.
