Processing Speed: What You Need to Know

Processing speed is the pace at which you take in information, make sense of it and begin to respond. This information can be visual, such as letters and numbers. It can also be auditory, such as spoken language.

Having slow processing speed has nothing to do with how smart kids are—just how fast they can take in and use information. It may take kids who struggle with processing speed a lot longer than other kids to perform tasks, both school-related and in daily life.

A Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a great way to relieve anxiety and stress in your body by having you slowly tense up your muscles and then gradually relax them again. This helps us to relax by making us focus on our muscles and how they feel when we relax them from a ‘tensed up state.’ When we practice progressive muscles relaxation regularly, it becomes a valuable tool we can use to help us to relax and calm our body. It will also help us to be able to recognize when our body is experiencing tension and then be able to relax it. The resource includes instructions and how progressive muscle relaxation works.

Rebecca Burgess’ Comic Redesigns the Autism Spectrum
Rating

"Rebecca Burgess sees a problem with the way many people perceive the autism spectrum. Her resolution? The comic below. The Tumblr user debuted “Understanding the Spectrum” (below), which gets rid of the linear autism spectrum image (i.e. you’re either “not autistic, “very autistic” or somewhere in between) and replaces it with a round spectrum full of several traits or ways the brain processes information."

Reconsidering Reading Levels – ONlit.org

Rating

The Ontario Human Rights Commission’s Right to Read inquiry concluded that running records and reading level assessments have not been effective in identifying students who need additional support or in providing teachers with accurate information to guide instruction. We now know that there are more effective ways to understand student reading skills and ensure that students are receiving the instruction that they need. This handout highlights why reading levels should be reconsidered, and frames the who, what, when, and how of different purposes for assessment: screening, diagnostic, progress monitoring, and outcome evaluation.

This handout builds educator knowledge of effective assessment practices to support explicit and systematic instruction of foundational reading skills.
