We’ve talked a lot in this series about how often you see data and statistics in the news and on social media - which is ALL THE TIME! But how do you know who and what you can trust? Today, we’re going to talk about how we, as consumers, can spot flawed studies, sensationalized articles, and just plain poor reporting. And this isn’t to say that all science articles you read on facebook or in magazines are wrong, but that it's valuable to read those catchy headlines with some skepticism.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate a secant to a circle. (not trig). The applet shows a circle and a secant line. The points where the secant cross the circle are both draggable. As you drag each, the secant line moves. If you carefully make the two points coincide, it shows a message that this is now a tangent line. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. The main areas of focus in the second grade math curriculum are: understanding the base-ten system within 1,000, including place value and skip-counting in fives, tens, and hundreds; developing fluency with addition and subtraction, including solving word problems; regrouping in addition and subtraction; describing and analyzing shapes; using and understanding standard units of measure; working with money and time; and introducing multiplication.
The worksheets and printables for second grade math available on this page will enhance any classroom's math curriculum. These engaging second grade math worksheets cover the basics of counting and ordering as well as addition and subtraction, and include exciting introductions to geometry and algebra for future self-assurance in math.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate a sector - a pie shaped part of a circle. The applet shows a sector against the background of the circle of which it is part. The endpoints of the arc defining it can be dragged and the calculation of the area of the sector is updated continuously. The web page has links to related definitions, and a formula for the area of the sector given its central angle. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate a segment of a circle - a part of a circle cut off by a chord. The applet shows a circle and a segment of that circle, the ends of which can be dragged to resize the segment. You can create the situation where the chord is a diameter and so no segments are created. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This resource is a component of the Math Open Reference Interactive Geometry textbook project at http://www.mathopenref.com.

An interactive applet and associated web page that show the semi-major and semi-minor axes of an ellipse. The applet has an ellipse whose major and minor axis endpoints can be dragged. As they are dragged the semi-major and semi-minor axes change length and may swap places. The applet also shows the location of the foci, which are always on the major axis, and shows how they move with variation of the semi-axis lengths. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. When collecting data to make observations about the world it usually just isn't possible to collect ALL THE DATA. So instead of asking every single person about student loan debt for instance we take a sample of the population, and then use the shape of our samples to make inferences about the true underlying distribution our data. It turns out we can learn a lot about how something occurs, even if we don't know the underlying process that causes it. Today, we’ll also introduce the normal (or bell) curve and talk about how we can learn some really useful things from a sample's shape - like if an exam was particularly difficult, how often old faithful erupts, or if there are two types of runners that participate in marathons!

Show Me Your Math is a program that invites Aboriginal Students in Atlantic Canada to explore the mathematics that is evident in their own community and cultural practices. Through exploring aspects of counting, measuring, locating, designing, playing, and explaining, students discover that mathematics is all around them and is connected to many of the cultural practices in their own communities.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate congruent line segments (segments that are the same length). The applet shows three line segments that are the same length. They all have draggable endpoints. As you drag any endpoint the other lines change to remain congruent with the one you are changing. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This resource is a component of the Math Open Reference Interactive Geometry textbook project at http://www.mathopenref.com.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the concept of similar triangles. Applets show that triangles are similar if the are the same shape and possibly rotated, or reflected. In each case the user can drag one triangle and see how another triangle changes to remain similar to it. The web page describes all this and has links to other related pages. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the slope (m) of a line. The applet has two points that define a line. As the user drags either point it continuously recalculates the slope. The rise and run are drawn to show the two elements used in the calculation. The grid, axis pointers and coordinates can be turned on and off. The slope calculation can be turned off to permit class exercises and then turned back on the verify the answers. The applet can be printed as it appears on the screen to make handouts. The web page has a full description of the concept of slope, a worked example and has links to other pages relating to coordinate geometry. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. Slow Reveal Graph (#slowrevealgraph) is an instructional routine that promotes sensemaking about data. This highly engaging routine uses scaffolded visuals and discourse to help students (in K-12 and beyond) make sense of data. As more and more of the graph is revealed, students refine their interpretation and construct meaning, often in surprising ways. This routine increases access for students without sacrificing rigor or engagement.
You will find all types of graphs for all ages of learners from elementary to high school.
Here are the steps: - It starts with a graph that has been stripped of context: its numbers, its labels, its title. - The teacher facilitates a discussion around what students notice and wonder. (The slides give discussion suggestions) - Then another slide is revealed. - Students identify what information is new. - Then another slide is revealed. - Again, students identify what information is new (the title) and discuss how this changes their understanding of the graph. - As more slides are added, more insight into this data representation is revealed.
The introductory page for the graph also offers more information about the context for this graph, other content connections, and paired texts for students to explore.
