In this activity, students construct their own rocket-powered boat called an "aqua-thruster." These aqua-thrusters will be made from a film canister and will use carbon dioxide gas produced from a chemical reaction between an antacid tablet and water to propel it. Students observe the effect that surface area of this simulated solid rocket fuel has on thrust.

The Arbor Knot is used to attach the fishing line to the “Arbor” or “Spool Center”. In fact the Arbor Knot is really based on a noose knot and, therefore, pulling tightens it. The same knot is used in Bushcraft under the name Canadian Jam Knot where a light rope, e.g., paracord, is being used to compress a load such as a sleeping bag or is used as the first step in creating a lashing.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the concept of an arc. The applet shows a circle with part of it highlighted to identify the arc. Each endpoint of the arc can be dragged to resize it. The web page has definitions and links to the properties of an arc. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the concept of arc length. The applet shows a circle with part of its circumference highlighted and the central angle shown. As the user drags either end of the arc it is redrawn and the calculation for arc length changes as you drag. The text on the web page gives the formula for calculating the arc length. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This resource is a component of the Math Open Reference Interactive Geometry textbook project at http://www.mathopenref.com.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the concept of the peripheral angle (inscribed angle) of an arc. This is the angle subtended at the circle circumference of an arc. The applet shows an arc with draggable end points and the angle it subtends at the circumference. It is seen that this angle is constant for a constant arc length. It shows also what happens when the vertex is inside the arc that subtends it The web page has links to other arc properties and a formula for the subtended angle for a given arc length. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This resource is a component of the Math Open Reference Interactive Geometry textbook project at http://www.mathopenref.com.

Students working collaboratively on a mini-archaeology dig to locate and identify artifacts, create hypotheses about the objects and what information they tell us about a society, and research past artifacts to determine if their hypotheses were correct. Students had to use collaboration when working on the dig, when creating their hypotheses, when measuring the artifacts, and when forming conclusions. Additionally, students had to use critical thinking when formulating theories, researching and reviewing data online, assessing their ideas, analyzing and comparing their hypotheses with archaeology studies online, and when justifying their hypotheses (and proving them) with the artifact data they discovered online, and forming conclusions.

In which John Green teaches you about the war that was supposed to end all wars. Instead, it solved nothing and set the stage for the world to be back at war just a couple of decades later. As an added bonus, World War I changed the way people look at the world, and normalized cynicism and irony. John will teach you how the assassination of an Austrian Archduke kicked off a new kind of war that involved more nations and more people than any war that came before. New technology like machine guns, airplanes, tanks, and poison gas made the killing more efficient than ever. Trench warfare and modern weapons led to battles in which tens of thousands of soldiers were killed in a day, with no ground gained for either side. World War I washed away the last vestiges of 19th century Romanticism and paved the way for the 20th century modernism that we all know and find to be cold and off-putting. While there may not be much upside to WWI, at least it inspired George M. Cohan to write the awesome song, "Over There."

The famous story of Archimedes running through the streets of Syracuse (in Sicily during the third century bc) shouting ''Eureka!!!'' (I have found it) reportedly occurred after he solved this problem. The problem combines the ideas of ratio and proportion within the context of density of matter.
