In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism, but not from the perspective of the colonizers. This week John looks at some Asian perspectives on Imperialism, specifically writers from countries that were colonized by European powers. We'll look at the writings of Sayyid Jamal ad-Din al-Afghani from the Middle East, Liang Qichao from China, and Rabindranath Tagore from India. these voices from the countries that were colonized give us a sense of how conquered people saw their conquerors, and gives an insight into what these nations learned from being dominated by Europe. It's pretty interesting, OK? A lot of this episode is drawn from a fascinating book by Pankaj Mishra called The Ruins of Empire: The Revolt Against the West and the Remaking of Asia. You should read it.

Askî’s Pond is an iPad math game for Grade 1 students, featuring the characters from Askî’s world. The game reinforces Saskatchewan curriculum math outcomes and processes and is available in the iTunes app store (free of charge) for all school divisions and First Nations Education Organizations. Search for “Aski’s Pond” or “Aski.”
Askî’s Pond supports math improvement and connects directly to the reading, writing and math and the First Nations, Métis and Inuit engagement outcomes. The game integrates mathematics and First Nations and Métis content, supports math instruction in the classroom and, like Help Me Tell My Story, is a wonderful family engagement tool.
The game can be played in either English or French.

Finding themselves in the middle of the Amazon rainforest after a plane crash, students use map scales, keys, and longitude and latitude coordinates to figure out where they are. Then they work in groups to generate ideas and make plans. They decide where they should go to be rescued, the distance to that location, the route to take, and make calculations to estimate walking travel time.
