Ayiti: The Cost of Life is a role-playing video game in which the player assumes the roles of family members living in rural Haiti. At the start of the game, the player chooses a primary goal for his/her family: achieve education, make money, stay healthy, or maintain happiness. During the course of the game, the player encounters unexpected events and must make decisions that contribute to or detract from achieving the chosen goal.

In this activity, students will research a political issue that is highlighted and discussed on the TakingITGlobal website. Students will pick one issue and write a one page satire on the event/issue. Part 2 of the assignment is for the students to create their own political cartoon using Photoshop or similar software.

In this lesson, students consider the value of setting goals for themselves and for their community, thinking critically about the idea of defining community and shared interests and concerns. This is an introduction to the concepts that underlie the Millennium Development Goals.

Students will learn how tobacco is advertised in different ways throughout their community. Using TIGed Collaborations, students can learn how tobacco is advertised in other parts of the world.

PTPI's Global Youth Murals Project poses a wonderful introduction to the ways in which children around the world represent their cultures through visual art. Using this collection in the Global Gallery, learners can examine different depictions of culture as an entry point to studying cultures of countries around the world. This activity can be an introductory exercise to social studies or world geography research projects.

Overview: Youth literacy can be promoted by leveraging youth culture, such as rap/music videos. By merging sound and visual imagery with text, a poetry writing task can be transformed into a multi-media video assignment. English teachers with access to a computer lab equipped with video editing software (e.g. i-Movie) can carry this out with their classes. Alternatively, English and computer lab teachers can collaborate to have their students produce thematic poetry videos as the culminating activity of an English poetry unit. It assumes that students have been taught the basic forms of poetry. Furthermore, by having students discuss the process of producing their poetry videos with peers in face-to-face or on-line workgroups, they develop the literate and social skills necessary for functioning effectively in the project-based team culture of today's workplace. Students will use the resources of takingitglobal.org to become informed about a theme of their choice. They will then compose a poem that expresses their thoughts and feelings about that topic. This poem will then form the basis for a video.

Students will analyze the use of tobacco in films, its placement and purpose.

This activity uses mapmaking and geography to plot the presence of the MDGs in communities, as well as visually represent development inequalities. The maps made in this lesson may be created using chart paper and markers, or using the Class Maps feature in TIGed Virtual Classrooms.

Using TIG profiles as an entry point, this activity explores a broader theme of "profiling" to enable students to examine how they present themselves, as well as cultural perceptions and biases within themselves, their peers, and their community. Students will read TIG profiles and Member Stories, with the objective of better understanding others' perspectives to critically reflect and write about their own identity.

By investigating the coverage of the Millennium Development Goals in the media, students learn about both the local and global presence of development issues, as well as gain an introduction to the way the media represents these issues in different parts of the world.

A special issue of Panorama, the online magazine of TakingITGlobal, was dedicated to the Millennium Development Goals and One World Youth Project Ambassadors from seven countries maintain a group blog that details the issues they have identified in their communities and action projects they are undertaking. Using these articles, students can apply previous learning about primary sources to understand the perspectives of youth around the world who are identifying issues and addressing the Goals in their communities.
