This is an activity about impact craters. Learners will experiment to create impact craters and examine the associated features. Then they observe images of lunar craters and explore how the mass, shape, velocity, and angle of impactors affects the size and shape of the crater. This activity is part of Explore! To the Moon and Beyond! - a resource developed specifically for use in libraries.

To begin, divide your students into groups of 4 or 5.

Graphs and charts are great because they communicate information visually. For this reason, graphs are often used in newspapers, magazines and businesses around the world.

NCES constantly uses graphs and charts in our publications and on the web. Sometimes, complicated information is difficult to understand and needs an illustration. Graphs or charts can help impress people by getting your point across quickly and visually.

This is not a video but a guided step-by-step visual guide.

This is a fun activity for students that collect trading cards. It takes a bit of work, but it is well worth it. Visit readwritethink to create the cards. You will have to be patient, and use screen captures and cropping to print the cards and have students glue them together (unless the site has changed since I last used it!). Train one tech-smart student how to do this, and let them be in charge of helping everyone else that selects this activity if possible. You will probably be restricted to printing your cards in black and white, but then you can always have your students colour them and glue them onto coloured paper to add some colour.
If fussing with the web site does not appeal to you - you could always make your own template as an MSWord document, or have the kids make them by hand instead as well.

This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fourth graders about creating largest and smallest numbers given digits.

Students will be able to understand how heredity affects agricultural decisions regarding wanted traits in animals, and will understand that DNA contains genes which carry traits from generation to generation.

You are preparing your family’s emergency kits in case there is a need to leave your home quickly, or stay in your home without electricity or water. You need to be able to create an emergency supply kit that includes a lightweight water filtration device that is low cost. This will provide you with clean water regardless of your water source.

In this project, you will gain knowledge of natural disaster preparedness through the Red Cross Pillowcase project. You will research and experiment with the water cycle to learn how water is naturally filtered. You will then design and build a water filtration device that could filter water in an emergency situation.

Students love games, so why not get them to make a trivia game about the play or novel? (Or maybe they have an even better idea than a trivia game!) This activity is great because it hits many multiple intelligences, and is really engaging for the kids. When the games are done you can have a celebration and invite people in to play the games with your students.

DNA. It's what makes you unique. Unless you have an identical twin, your DNA is different from that of every other person in the world. And that's what makes DNA fingerprinting possible. Experts can use DNA fingerprints for everything from determining a biological mother or father to identifying the suspect of a crime. What, then, is a DNA fingerprint and how is it made? Here, you'll find out by solving a mystery—a crime of sorts. First, you'll create a DNA fingerprint (we'll supply the lab and all necessary materials). Then you'll compare this DNA fingerprint to those of all seven suspects to nab the perpetrator. Ready? Let's get to work!

This is a great assignment if you are trying to tap into procedural knowledge. You can provide a few choices for the manual or let students select their own. Some examples may be How to Graduate Hogwarts, How to Rule the World, How to Stay Calm in Any Situation - any theme related to the novel that students have read!

This is one of my new favourite activities, because it really gets students thinking, and it has them referencing the script as well as using their own knowledge and preferences. In the version of the assignment below, the students were asked to select 10 songs (you can of course adjust this number) and for each song they had to provide the title, artist, mood of the song, reference the act and scene the character would listen to it with a page number, and defend why the song is a good choice for that character at that point in the play/novel.
