Established in 2005 in the University of Saskatchewan's College of Education, the Aboriginal Education Research Centre (AERC) seeks to create, support, and disseminate innovative Indigenous education research. Through partnerships with scholars, faculty, students, community-based organizations, schools, federal and provincial governments, AERC is working to build stronger relationships among those involved with Indigenous education.

The Assembly of First Nations has developed the It's Our Time First Nations Tool Kit as the basis of a comprehensive strategy to reach out to First Nations students, teachers, schools, communities and the Canadian public at large. The resource is designed to bring together First Nations and non-First Nations people and foster a spirit of cooperation, understanding, and action.

This video resource, created for teachers and students in Saskatchewan, offers insights from four cultural groups: Anishinabee, Cree, Métis, and Dene. It includes personal stories that emphasize the significance of the seasons and how they influence community life and traditional practices. You’ll discover reflections on the essential roles of elders and knowledge keepers, as well as the importance of kinship, family, and community connections. The resource also addresses Treaty education, storytelling, traditional foods, ceremonies, land-based learning, along with personal narratives about residential schools. By sharing these stories and perspectives, we enhance our understanding and knowledge as we progress on the journey of truth and reconciliation.

This report examines some of the key issues surrounding the education of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and proposes a governance framework that school boards can use to improve student results.

The Readiness IC Maps focus on actions and practices to help school-wide efforts to increase Métis, First Nations and Inuit student achievement. They provide clear, specific and shared descriptions of what a new initiative or practice should look like.

Following Their Voices is an initiative designed to raise the educational achievement and participation of Saskatchewan's First Nations, Métis and Inuit students. Following Their Voices focuses on enhancing relationships between students and teachers, creating structures and supports for teachers and school administrators to co-construct teaching and learning interactions with students and creating safe, well-managed learning environments. Following Their Voices is based on research that was conducted with First Nations and Métis engaged and non-engaged students, parents/caregivers, teachers and school administrators about what is needed in order to be successful as a First Nations or Métis student in school. The ‘voices’ of these groups of people were profound in terms of the issues they identified. Their words and insights, along with international research, and guidance and advice from Elders and Knowledge Keepers formed the foundation of this initiative.

"Indigenous Canada is a 12-lesson Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from the Faculty of Native Studies that explores Indigenous histories and contemporary issues in Canada. From an Indigenous perspective, this course explores key issues facing Indigenous peoples today from a historical and critical perspective highlighting national and local Indigenous-settler relations. Topics for the 12 lessons include the fur trade and other exchange relationships, land claims and environmental impacts, legal systems and rights, political conflicts and alliances, Indigenous political activism, and contemporary Indigenous life, art and its expressions."

Curriculum Objectives:
- To increase awareness of the residential school system as a major part of the European colonizing effort against Aboriginal peoples, resulting in significant intergenerational impacts.
- To increase awareness and understanding of what Nishnawbe Aski Nation (Ontario) members experienced while attending the 13 residential schools in the region.
- To promote awareness in reclaiming language, culture and skills that were lost as a result of residential schools.
- To promote individual healing in the context of rebuilding links with families, communities and Elders.

Eleven of the ninety-four Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) final report are specific to education. Call to Action 63, “Building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect,” challenges Canadian education systems to focus on students’ understanding of Indigenous human rights and social justice initiatives. Non-Indigenous students are now beginning to learn about the truth of residential schools, treaties and other long-standing issues facing Indigenous communities such as lack of clean drinking water, housing and food shortages. Truth and reconciliation is a spiritual and emotional journey required of all students and educators – from the head to the heart – that will unfold differently for everyone.

The Children’s Health and Well-being Measure (ACHWM) is a tool that gives Indigenous communities and organizations an overview of the health and well-being of children and youth in their communities.

The measure offers insight into children's Spiritual, Emotional, Physical, and Mental wellness.

The survey is completed on a tablet that engages children and acts as a catalyst for honest conversation. The results are shared with each child or youth in a visual form on the Balance Chart.

The National Centre for Collaboration in Indigenous Education connects communities with each other to share their stories about Indigenous education across Canada and around the world.

Inspiring Success: First Nations and Métis PreK-12 Education Policy Framework was renewed in collaboration among First Nations and Métis organizations, Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers, post-secondary and provincial Prekindergarten to Grade 12 education stakeholders, and the Ministry of Education. The vision of Inspiring Success is a provincial Prekindergarten to Grade 12 education system that foundationally places Indigenous knowledge systems, cultures and languages within the structures, policies and curricula to ensure an equitable and inclusive system that benefits all learners. As such, this renewed policy framework guides actions at all levels of the education sector and is aligned with the goals of the Education Sector Strategic Plan. Inspiring Success supports reconciliation, treaty education, Indigenous cultures and languages in the classroom, as well as the infusion of Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing into all renewed curricula to benefit all learners.

The ministry is committed to facilitate the sharing of information, tools and processes useful to school divisions, teachers and administrators in planning and implementing actions in First Nations and Métis education, in alignment with the policy goals. Improving First Nations, Métis and Inuit student achievement and the learning outcomes for all students is a shared responsibility throughout the PreK-12 education sector.

As a first step, it is recommended to become familiar with the policy framework.

Implementation
We heard from First Nations and Métis organizations, Elders, provincial education stakeholders and post-secondary institutions about how crucial implementation will be for this policy framework. We acknowledge the considerable number of initiatives and programs put in place by government and by school divisions; however, there is more work to do. A variety of tools and resources are available to assist with creating awareness, building support, planning and implementation, including a webinar presentation, PowerPoint slideshow, promotional handout and dialogue questions. Many links are provided within each goal area as suggested resources for teachers and administrators. More will be added as new information and tools become available.
