Read & Write at Home

Read! Children need to read or be read to every day. This includes reading to learn as well as reading for enjoyment. Reading should be no less than 20 minutes a day.  If you are home all day, a few 20 minute sessions would be great. The Resource Bank has plenty of audio books, story times and online reading available if you are short on books at home. You will find great reading resources in each grade collection.  Sun West families also have access to Sora for reading books and Pearson E-Texts for textbooks.

Write! Your child should do a bit of writing (this includes typing) every day.  They can respond to what they read, write a journal or poem, work on a story or essay, or write a "how-to" manual.  Kids could even watch one of our live animal cams and write an observation or story based on their expereince.  The possibilities are endless.

If you find there are too many resources to sort through, you can filter the results using the “Filter Resources” area on the left side of the screen.  Select “Education Level” to narrow your results to a specific education level. (Please note - for the purposes of this site these "Education Levels" are used when filtering - Lower Primary = K-2, Upper Primary=3-5, Middle Years=6-8, High School=9-12)

Beginning Reading Instruction (BRI)/Advanced Reading Instruction (ARI) is a highly researched, and simple reading program that helps children learn to decode.

A teaching guide, along with the three sets of books, and the booster set (extra practice) are all you need to begin teaching a child to read. Additional materials, such as tests to make sure a child has mastered the skills after they complete each set, and ways to keep track of progress are included.

Each book set offers a drop down menu featuring the book, suggestions for looking through and discussing the book and story questions.
