Throughout the course of the year students are expected to collect and write abstracts on 20 Biology and Biotechnology articles. The articles must be up to date and current. Students are asked to write on the connections and possible applications these new technologies and information will have on their lives and people in general. Students can be creative in their presentation of their articles and information. Students can make many connections to other material covered in the course and comment on that as well. Students have become somewhat of an expert on the topic they have done a particular article on. During class students will sometimes volunteer and sometimes be asked for their expertise during a class discussion. This often creates some good discussions that hopefully make students think.

I created this assessment to end our genetics unit. This assessment allowed students to apply the knowledge they had gained throughout the unit. It connects to the 21st Century C's by encouraging critical thinking (for example one student further investigated her own colourblindess), it encouraged development of literacy skills as the students researched complex disorders on their own and provided a framework for communication and technology skills through the presentation. I presented this assessment using a Still Alice hook - "If your mother was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's would you take the test". I think this encouraged students to select a disorder/genetic issue based on their own interests and perhaps a genetic disorder in their family. Allowing the students to also use pharmaceutical and agriculture genetic cases created a broader focus enhancing the diversity of presentations.
Established Goals:
Students will…..
Foundational Learning Objective 3.2 (discussing examples of current uses of DNA in agriculture and pharmaceutical industries)
Foundational Learning Objective 2.9 (Discuss several human genetic disorders)
Foundational Learning Objective 3.3 (discuss the techniques of genetic screening).

The purpose of this Guide is to enhance your students' knowledge and appreciation of the Black Canadian experience, drawing from Lawrence Hill's award-winning historical fiction, The Book of Negroes, the remarkable journey of Aminata Diallo and the historic British document known as the "Book of Negroes." Structured around themes of journey, slavery, human rights, passage to Canada and contemporary culture, this Guide asks students to examine issues of identity, equality, community, and nation-building in both a historical and contemporary context.

Over the past several years that I have taught Science 9, I always assigned a major independent project to cover the outcomes in the Exploring Our Universe unit. Since this unit is a favorite with my students, I began to integrate some instructional pieces above and beyond their major projects, and ended up with a loose version of a blended learning unit. Unlike the other units in Science 9, Exploring Our Universe lends itself well to blended learning as the content can be easily comprehended by most students without lecture-style teaching. Instead, students are provided with a range of instructional experiences, which include small group work, computer-based learning, individual work areas, and teacherlead small groups. Students have a choice for most activities, which means all the outcomes will be covered, but the depth and areas of focus will vary from student to student. All activities are self-pacing, and will receive either a formative or summative assessment throughout the unit. As you will see, some activities work well as for both small group work and individual work areas. We use Pearson Saskatchewan Science 9 as a textbook for this unit

We used blogging for many assignments, journals, and in place of exit slips often. We started out with familiarizing ourselves with how to log in and create posts. Our earliest posts were very basic, starting with introducing ourselves and writing about our likes, dislikes, what we did on the weekend, etc. Students were asked to create responses about a novel study we had done, The Mouse and the Motorcycle. I created prompts and had students submit their posts. After finishing the novel, we watched the video and then posted a compare/contrast assignment on the blog. We also used the "Piracy Pirates" game at mediasmarts and blogged about 3 things we learned and the connections we made between online privacy/safety and our own experiences. Students were always encouraged to make quality comments to their peers after posting.

This is a group project I use when teaching body systems in grade 5. Each group is assigned a specific body system to research, write about, create a diagram, and then present to the class. Once all groups have presented to the class, I give each student a test, to assess how much information they understood.
