Students learn that ordinary citizens, including students like themselves, can make meaningful contributions to science through the concept of "citizen science." First, students learn some examples of ongoing citizen science projects that are common around the world, such as medical research, medication testing and donating idle computer time to perform scientific calculations. Then they explore Zooniverse, an interactive website that shows how research in areas from marine biology to astronomy leverage the power of the Internet to use the assistance of non-scientists to classify large amounts of data that is unclassifiable by machines for various reasons. To conclude, student groups act as engineering teams to brainstorm projects ideas for their own town that could benefit from community help, then design conceptual interactive websites that could organize and support the projects.

The goal of this unit is for grade nine students to explore some of the civilizations and societies that have shaped society today. Students will have a balance of independent and collaborative formats to demonstrate their learning.
The unit will be broken up into the following periods of history. There will be a center in the room for each time period, and students must complete all of the work for one civilization before they are permitted to move to the next. Socratic seminars are a democratic, student-centered, approach to class discussions. They can be used at any grade level with any subject area. In a Socratic Seminar, members meet in a circle and share their insights. Participants do not raise their hands or call on names. Because there’s no discussion leader, each member can comment or ask follow-up questions to one another. This approach can be empowering for participants because they own the conversation. Unlike a typical class discussion, the conversation moves fluidly back and forth rather than having to go through the teacher.

In this lesson students will learn about the five types of nutrients and their purposes. This lesson will also cover symptoms of nutritional deficiencies in livestock. I divide this lesson into two class periods. On the first day we talk about nutrients and the second day we talk about the importance of nutrients for body functions such as growth, reproduction, and maintenance. At the end, students will have to pass a quiz that covers most of the main information taught during these lessons as a means to exhibit proficient comprehension of the information and its importance.
