Math Templates for Spinners
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

Use the math templates below to create spinners for probability experiments. The templates are designed to be placed in sheet protectors. Students can then customize the spinner for the particular experiment or game. Tape a transparent spinner over top the spinner template for student use. This method allows teachers to create many different spinners using templates and the plastic transparent spinners that are commercially available. This is especially effective when students are designing their own games as they can customize one of the templates or design their own on the computer. The use of the transparent spinner is more reliable than the pencil and paper clip method often suggested as a cost-saving strategy.

The Mathematical Implications of Lying
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

This article explores how statistics can be interpreted in different ways to yield different conclusions. It describes the outcome and discussion of two class activities. In the first, the results are interpreted to "show" that taking a group rather than an individual perspective is ultimately beneficial to the individual. In the second, a variation is added "showing" that telling the truth is better that lying. This resource is from PUMAS - Practical Uses of Math and Science - a collection of brief examples created by scientists and engineers showing how math and science topics taught in K-12 classes have real world applications.

Numeracy is having the confidence and habits of mind to use mathematics to meet the general demands of everyday life. Being a numerate person means using mathematics to make sense of something new and know what mathematics can and cannot do.

Numeracy provides First Nations, Métis and Inuit students the opportunity to discover connections on their own and apply strategies to solve real life problems. Throughout history, First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples have used real life traditional learning contexts to connect to their world.

In the Empowering the Spirit video series, students explore numeracy through Traditional Games, an elementary math class on probability and a high school physics class examining the structure of a tee pee and rocket nozzle.
