In an effort to incorporate Blended Learning Strategies into my PAA 6/7 class I investigated multiple interface options including Moodle and Class Notebook. After consulting the Technology Coaches, a decision was made to use OneNote Class Notebook, as the grade 6/7 class had just been introduced to their Sun West email and having one access location was ideal. OneNote is an extension of the Sun West email and thus could be accessed from anywhere. In addition, OneNote Class Notebook allows me to see all student work. Students only have access to their own work and work in the shared workspaces. Google Sketchup was used as the CAD program. This program is available for free download, thus students could have the program at home.

I decided that we would collaborate and think creatively in our own classroom. We brainstormed on the SMART board and created KWL charts about each organ: the brain, the heart, and the lungs. From there I decided to use a board game as their assessment. Together again we created a SMART board list of what things needed to be included in a board game. After that I printed off the list and they had to fill it out. Once they had filled out all of the required areas they were allowed to start creating their board games. They used items from both school and home to develop their board games. We have a class set of laptops so they we eager to use those to type out instructions and rules. Once we were all finished our games we set out to play them. The students assessed each other’s games based on a 5 point rubric. They had a blast and learned a lot too!

Next photocopy the picture and use primary colors to paint the picture. Allow the students to use the paints to create secondary colors. Paint the second picture (photocopied) using only these created secondary colors. Display these two art samples and look at and discuss the various Saskatchewan Art created and have a discussion about the colors.

Students choose a novel that is appropriate to their reading level (teacher-approved). They read it in ELA/during DEAR time. I set a date that they needed to be finished reading by so they could estimate where they needed to be at by the end of each week. When they finished reading, they used Bristol board to create a “puzzle” for their novel. Each piece of the puzzle contained a written description of information. On the opposite side, students draw a different cover for their novel that shows an important event or setting. You can upload the picture to a website to create it as an online puzzle for friends to complete! After, I had them cut the actual Bristol board into the 6 puzzle shapes, as you can see in the examples I included on the subsequent pages.

I wanted to come up with a creative and fun way for them to display their knowledge. I attended an amazing session at FETC in Orlando called “Storytelling For The Youtube Generation” that showcased the many opportunities to use popular youtube videos as educational tools (Check out Steve Dembo for more information - he has some great prezis). Their story will include the historical event setting and characteristics that describe the specific time period and event in history. Learning will be enhanced by technology infusion and the incorporation of 21 Century learning competencies. I have been doing expert writing with the older students for a few years now as an independent English Language Arts project while I am working with the younger students. However, I have been disappointed with the variety and creativity in presentations. I give them a list of possible formats and they choose the topic they are interested in researching and how they want to present what they have learned. Only 1 or 2 have been brave enough to deviate from the traditional written report, or poster. My plan was to do a variety of creativity projects from the Destination Imagination series to foster creativity and get them in the right frame of mind before doing their projects. My goal was to bring 21st Century Competences with the focus of critical thinking into my Gr. 2 Math classroom. I show a droodle – an abstract drawing. I ask students to take a few moments and think about what it could be. Then they can discuss with a partner, and finally share what they thought. Afterwards we have a discussion around “right” and “wrong” answers – which is a common way to think around math. My goal was to have grade 5-8 students incorporate critical thinking in their reader response journals, where they respond to text read independently during Guided Reading stations. I feel reader response journals encourage students to apply strategies taught in class when reading independently to improve their understanding of a variety of text. Our SLIP goal for the past two years focused on reading strategies, so I was also trying to build on the work we were doing for the West Colony PLT.

In our unit on forces and simple machines we incorporated many different uses of technology. During our unit the students were given an opportunity to work collaboratively and think critically. After learning all about simple machine and forces, my class had to collaboratively design a fair test that would explore one of type of force. Each group created a fair a test and designed and collected materials to carry out this experiment. They also had to create a tool to record their results. During their experiment we had 3 adults with iPads who walked around the room videoing as the students explained their findings. This allowed us to check their understanding at this point. Some ways we used technology throughout this unit - Used as an instructional tool - Students used to share their results - Shared results through pictures and videos - Present Data - Generate class discussions - Final Assessment (students created a PowerPoint)
