We have been using more Inquiry and Project Based Learning in our Grade 4 Social Studies class at OES this year, with the students learning to think critically and work collaboratively as they investigated the “big questions” tied to the SS outcomes. They were encouraged to reach beyond the classroom and access resource people outside the school in their research. The Grade 4 Social Studies curriculum is based on Saskatchewan content and we were fortunate to connect with some excellent sources and learning partners from all around the province.

Pobble365 helps to keep students writing. Every day, Pobble365 provides a weird, wonderful, and/or thought provoking image to spark ideas for discussions and writing. It is free and along with a different idea-inspiring image every day, Pobble365 provides a story starter, discussion questions, as well as sentence challenges and “sick sentences” to build language skills. If students don’t have online access, images and writing supports can be printed and photocopied.

The activities include a prompt, sentences stems, vocabulary bank, questions, and challenges to help you scaffold your lesson.

The Ministry of Education’s Student Achievement and Supports branch has developed Instructional Supports for Diverse Writers to support the ESSP’s At Grade Level in Reading, Writing and Math priority. The document focuses on instructional considerations, practices and strategies for students to develop and improve their writing skills. The intended audience for the document is the middle level (grades 4-9) classroom teacher.

In this lesson, students examine and create holiday/event cards, analyze holiday elements, and create their own. The activities help students focus on the reasons for composing messages as they do.
