We used blogging for many assignments, journals, and in place of exit slips often. We started out with familiarizing ourselves with how to log in and create posts. Our earliest posts were very basic, starting with introducing ourselves and writing about our likes, dislikes, what we did on the weekend, etc. Students were asked to create responses about a novel study we had done, The Mouse and the Motorcycle. I created prompts and had students submit their posts. After finishing the novel, we watched the video and then posted a compare/contrast assignment on the blog. We also used the "Piracy Pirates" game at mediasmarts and blogged about 3 things we learned and the connections we made between online privacy/safety and our own experiences. Students were always encouraged to make quality comments to their peers after posting.
Students work together to create their own utopias, using blogs as the primary source of publication.
Students will make a proportional model of blood out of red gelatin, a plastic bag, and rice. They will learn about the different components that make up blood and will investigate what happens when the arteries and veins experience buildup from cholesterol. They will then work in pairs to brainstorm ways to clean our clogged arteries.
Students are introduced to the circulatory system with an emphasis on the blood clotting process, including coagulation and the formation and degradation of polymers through their underlying atomic properties. They learn about the medical emergency of strokes the loss of brain function commonly due to blood clots including various causes and the different effects depending on the brain location, as well as blood clot removal devices designed by biomedical engineers.
This activity was designed for blind learners, but all types of learners can use it to understand how blood flows through the heart. The purpose of this activity is to illustrate the flow of blood in the heart and the function of the heart valves. It offers an opportunity to study the chambers, valves and blood flow with hands on, and an interactive method.
Students study how heart valves work and investigate how valves that become faulty over time can be replaced with advancements in engineering and technology. Learning about the flow of blood through the heart, students are able to fully understand how and why the heart is such a powerful organ in our bodies.
Blood behaves not unlike those spilled water droplets, and the speed at which the droplets travel when they strike a surface, known to analysts as a target, affects their shape. This speed, combined with angle and surface characteristics, also determines how far blood droplets skip or bounce after meeting a barrier.
Half of all Canadians are fit to donate blood, but only 1 in 60 Canadians gave blood last year. Our organ donation rates are also lower than many countries, including the United States.
Because blood behaves according to certain scientific principles, trained bloodstain pattern analysts can examine the blood evidence left behind and draw conclusions as to how the blood may have been shed. From what may appear to be a random distribution of bloodstains at a crime scene, analysts can categorize the stains by gathering information from spatter patterns, transfers, voids and other marks that assist investigators in recreating the sequence of events that occurred after bloodshed. This form of physical evidence requires the analyst to recognize and interpret patterns to determine how those patterns were created.
