Students needed to become a little bit more independent in the cooking lab in creating their own final product to present to a panel of judges. Students had a lot of fun with the “competition” aspect of it. They competed for 5 classes worth of not having to wash dishes.

The Cupcake Color Wheel activity provides a meaningful, memorable way for students to study Color Theory. Used in my Practical and Applied Arts 10- Survey class, it is part of the Interior Design module. Through this activity, students learn color terminology, mixing colors, and gain knowledge and understanding in the concepts of complementary colors, values, and chroma. If this activity is completed as part of a Food Studies class, it provides students an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in the kitchen basics, and in the preparation of cakes and frostings.

All the students in our school have iPads and I recently had received 2 LEGO robotics kits; I wanted to find a way to mesh the two together. LEGO has a free app (for iPads only) that allows students to program their robot and connect to it via Bluetooth. The goal of this assignment is to learn about basic function of the LEGO EV3 robot. This includes the motor, color sensor and ultrasonic sensor. The main objective is to learn how to program, or "code", the robot to perform various functions using the "LEGO Mindstorms Programming App".

Students work in pairs to create venn diagrams that will show the differences and similarities between an online and an offline community. The class brainstormed examples together, creating a large list on the board. Examples include: twitter, vine, Instagram, the school volleyball team, places people work, a youth group center. Once pairs have selected their communities, they used Creatly.com to create a venn diagram that showed their ideas about how each community is unique yet has some things in common. When students completed their venn diagram, they posted it on a Small Group in Edmodo to share it with the class. Students then individually commented on each of the other pairs diagrams, telling them one thing they liked about the diagram and one thing that they think might have been done better.

To give students an aid to help them track their food intake and track their exercise.

MyFitnessPal is a website ( www.myfitnesspal.com ) that helps people count their calories by entering it into an online diary, as well as keep track of their exercise. • Exercise Tracker: MyFitnessPal has more than 350 exercise stored in its database, and it shows how much each person burns during each activity, based on their specific height, weight, and gender. It includes most cardio and strength training workouts, as well as yoga and Pilates. • The app’s calorie counter is basically an online diary of each MyFitnessPal member’s intake. The counter allows members to set daily goals, and the app can add multiple foods at once. It also automatically stores food and meals that members eat often, which makes them easy to find when they eat them again and need to log them. • MyFitnessPal is not a one-size-fits-all app. Personal diet profiles can be changed to fit a person’s specific needs, whether they are on a strict diet or have certain recommendations from their doctor or dietitian. The program calculates caloric need based on height, weight, gender, and lifestyle.

Patient Problem Solving for Middle Years Math

Patient Problem Solving is a method of solving problems that you don't
already know how to solve. You are required to ask questions in order to
even start solving the problem. Sometimes those questions are asked of the
teacher, sometimes other students, and sometimes Google. For example,
students are asked to use a ticker tape timer to calculate their speed. First of
all students (and maybe you as the teacher) need to figure out what a ticker
tape timer does. There are a variety of ways to solve these problems, and
creativity will help them get to an answer.

Early in the year, have the students fill in the questionnaire and begin to think of activities they would enjoy participating in. This will help the teacher make decisions regarding class activities and individual time for students. Spend some time in a lab allowing students to find activities that will work on areas identified in their FITT plan (for example, if they want to improve their flexibility on the sit and reach by 10 cm, have them research exercises that increase flexibility). Students will add these exercises to their portfolio. Allow students time to work on their FITT plans during designated times throughout the year. Students can track results through FItstats fitness tests performed 5 times per year.

Personalizing Roadways

I piloted the Roadways tier 3 reading intervention program. I followed the program with fidelity; however, I personalized it for the students that I worked with. The portion that I found needed to be more personalized was the teacher reading portion. I used the props that were recommended in the Reciprocal reading guide. They worked well to introduce the concepts to my students, but after a while they focused so much on the props that they had a difficult time focusing on the task at hand. I felt hat other strategies needed to be added. Everyday we still focus on the Fab Four (Summarize, Clarify, Question and Predict), but everyday I add in another activity focusing on one of the Fab Four Strategies.
