Students make bookmarks on computers and share their ideas with other readers at their school, while practicing summarizing, recognizing symbols, and writing reviews-all for an authentic audience.

Students identify the elements of fiction in a book they have read and share summaries of them by writing and illustrating their own mini-book.

Students write resumes for historical fiction characters. They first explore help wanted ads to see what employers want, and then draft resumes for the characters they've chosen.

This booklet contains 7 chapters on topics related to how to earn, save, budget, spend, borrow, protect and give money. Whether you get a weekly allowance or get paid for walking your  neighbor’s dog, your first step in handling your money well is to think about short-term and long-term goals. Then make a plan to reach them. It takes a bit of practice to master your money, just like it takes time to learn to  ride a bike. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll be ready to tackle all sorts of money twists and turns.

This biography relates the life of John Batterson Stetson as a hatting apprentice until he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and decided to explore the American West. The lessons in this issue of Smithsonian in Your Classroom introduce the work of botanists and botanical illustrators, specifically their race to make records of endangered plant species around the world. “Very little of the world’s flora has been fully studied,” says one Smithsonian botanist, “and time is running out.” In the first lesson, students gets to know six endangered plants. They examine illustrations, photographs, and dried specimens of the plants as they consider this question: If a scientist can take a picture of a plant, are there advantages in having an illustration? They go on to consider some of the big questions that botanists themselves must ask: Which of these species are most in need of conservation efforts? Are any of these plants more worth saving than others?In the second lesson, the students try their own hands at botanical illustration, following the methods of a Smithsonian staff illustrator. All that is required for the lesson are pencils, markers, tracing paper, and access to a photocopier.

This lesson discusses the result of a charge being subject to both electric and magnetic fields at the same time. It covers the Hall effect, velocity selector, and the charge to mass ratio. Given several sample problems, students learn to calculate the Hall Voltage dependent upon the width of the plate, the drift velocity, and the strength of the magnetic field. Then students learn to calculate the velocity selector, represented by the ratio of the magnitude of the fields assuming the strength of each field is known. Finally, students proceed through a series of calculations to arrive at the charge to mass ratio. A homework set is included as an evaluation of student progress.

Students find the volume and surface area of a rectangular box (e.g., a cereal box), and then figure out how to convert that box into a new, cubical box having the same volume as the original. As they construct the new, cube-shaped box from the original box material, students discover that the cubical box has less surface area than the original, and thus, a cube is a more efficient way to package things. Students then consider why consumer goods generally aren't packaged in cube-shaped boxes, even though they would require less material to produce and ultimately, less waste to discard. To display their findings, each student designs and constructs a mobile that contains a duplicate of his or her original box, the new cube-shaped box of the same volume, the scraps that are left over from the original box, and pertinent calculations of the volumes and surface areas involved. The activities involved provide valuable experience in problem solving with spatial-visual relationships.

Il existe deux types d’activités. Les activités dans les trousses et les activités pour les objets.

Les activités dans les trousses proposent des projets qui s’étendent sur un ou plusieurs cours. Ces activités reposent sur les concepts de la pensée historique, dans le cadre de l’exploration de l’ensemble de la trousse, ce qui offre une expérience approfondie.

Les activités pour les objets sont courtes; elles prennent pour la plupart de 5 à 25 minutes à réaliser. Elles encouragent les élèves à exercer leur esprit critique à l’égard des objets présentés et à faire usage des concepts de la pensée historique.

Les deux types d’activités ont été créés selon les conseils de spécialistes de l’enseignement de partout au Canada. Elles intègrent les théories et les méthodes pédagogiques actuelles.»
