Today, we're going to talk about how the Internet works. Specifically, how that stream of characters you punch into your browser's address bar, like "youtube.com", return this very website. Just to clarify we're talking in a broader sense about that massive network of networks connecting millions of computers together, not just the World Wide Web, which is a portion of the Internet, and our topic for next week. Today, we're going to focus on how data is passed back and forth - how a domain name is registered by the Domain Name System, and of course how the data requested or sent gets to the right person in little packets following standard Internet Protocol, or IP. We'll also discuss two different approaches to transferring this data: Transmission Control Protocol, or TCP, when we need to be certain no information is lost, and User Datagram Protocol, or UDP, for those time sensitive applications - because nobody wants an email with missing text, but they also don't want to get lag-fragged in their favorite first person shooter.

Search tools are not independently intelligent. They cannot understand what you type in, only match it. Sometimes, there are multiple types of meanings that match a query, so a savvy searcher uses special symbols or words, designated by the particular search tool in use at the time. These special symbols are called operators, and Google as a number of them.

This division task asks studnets to consider the conceptual understanding of something usually taught as a rote procedure. To be successful with this task, students must make sense of the procedure and how place value is represented and abbreviated within it.

The purpose of this task is to help students learn to read information about a function from its graph, by asking them to show the part of the graph that exhibits a certain property of the function. The task could be used to further instruction on understanding functions, or as an assessment tool with the caveat that it requires some amount of creativity to decide how to best illustrate some of the statements.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the 'Intersecting Chords' Theorem. (When two chords intersect each other inside a circle, the products of their segments are equal.) The applet presents a circle with two chords. Each end of the chord can be dragged. As it being dragged a calculation continuously changes that shows that the products of their segment are in fact equal. The calculation can be turned off for class discussions. An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the 'Intersecting Secants Theorem'. The applet shows a circle and two secant lines intersecting at a point outside the circle. The secant points and the external point are draggable. As you drag them the secant lines are redrawn and a realtime computation on the applet shows that the product of their segments are always the same. By dragging two secant points together, the Tangent-Secant Theorem is also demonstrated. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. An interactive applet and associated web page that show how to find the intersection of two straight lines, given the equation for each. The applet sows two lines defined by two pairs draggable points. As any point is dragged the equations for the lines are derived and the point of intersection calculated. The web page shows worked examples using various line slopes, equation forms and unusual conditions, such as one line being vertical. The grid, axis pointers and coordinates can be turned on and off. The equation display can be turned off to permit class exercises and then turned back on the verify the answers. The applet can be printed as it appears on the screen to make handouts. The web page has a full description of the concept of the equation of a line, a worked example and has links to other pages relating to coordinate geometry.
