This playbook combines decades of nationwide research with examples and resources developed by educators in the state of Alaska. You’ll find an introduction to phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. You will also find links to valuable resources where you can continue to deepen your knowledge.

Beginning Reading Instruction (BRI)/Advanced Reading Instruction (ARI) is a highly researched, and simple reading program that helps children learn to decode.

A teaching guide, along with the three sets of books, and the booster set (extra practice) are all you need to begin teaching a child to read. Additional materials, such as tests to make sure a child has mastered the skills after they complete each set, and ways to keep track of progress are included.

Each book set offers a drop down menu featuring the book, suggestions for looking through and discussing the book and story questions.

This site offers free Research-Based, Teacher-Approved Texts for supporting decoding and beyond.

- Beyond Decodables aim to support young readers success in reading by allowing children the chance to decode words in a meaningful context.

FreeReading is an open source instructional program that helps educators teach early literacy. Because it is open source, it represents the collective wisdom of a wide community of teachers and researchers. FreeReading contains, Intervention A, a 40-week scope and sequence of primarily phonological awareness and phonics activities that can support and supplement a typical kindergarten or first grade "core" or "basal" program.

Phonological awareness skills are important in order to develop good reading and spelling skills. Having good phonological awareness skills means that a child is able to manipulate sounds and words, or “play” with sounds and words. For example, you might ask your child to break the word “cat” into individual sounds: “c-a-t.” Important: These skills deal with SOUNDS not letters. For example, /t/ represents the sound and not the letter name “tee.” You will not use any written or visual letters when working with phonological activities. These activities are done with listening and speaking only. Learning the letter names and their corresponding sounds is also very important but should be taught and practiced at a different time of the day. Half-Pint Kids is a set of materials written by a teacher for teachers. Besides colorfully illustrated decodable stories, you will find links to Teaching Guides, Activity Pages and Literacy Centers.

Kindergarten ELA - SegmentingWeek 2 - The teacher says a word, student is asked to say the two parts - separately, out loud and with clapping. Week 5 - The teacher says a word, student is asked to say the two parts - separately and out loud.
