Seesaw is a valuable learning and communication tool to bring the classroom experience into the homes of your students and engage parents as partners in their child’s education. Documentation of learning, through Seesaw, will have an incredible impact on engagement as it showcases evidence and growth of learning in a timely and family-friendly manner. The continuum guide is intended to provide educators with concrete formative assessment examples of the types, and depth, of information that educators can track and share with families. Adapted and developed with permission from Prairie Valley School Division No. 208 and Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division No.119

SeeSaw in a Multi-Grade Classroom

SeeSaw is an app that allows students to have a blog within our classroom. We use it as a communication tool for parents and online portfolio in Kindergarten. I created learning folders to be used for assessing learning outcomes. In Grade One students use their ipads to take pictures of their school work. They decide what items they want to be posted on their blog. They also practice writing on the note pad and drawing through the drawing portion of the app. I also document grade one learning on SeeSaw.

Students use a simple seesaw to visualize solving a two- or three-step mathematics equation, while solving a basic structural engineering weight balance problem in the process. They solve two-step equations on a worksheet and attempt to solve the challenge of "balancing a beam" through hands-on problems. The use of sensor equipment for correct position monitoring aids students in balancing the structure, as well as balancing the equation as they solve it on paper.
