This task guides students by asking the series of specific questions and lets them explore the concepts of probability as a fraction of outcomes, and using two-way tables of data. The emphasis is on developing their understanding of conditional probability. The task could lead to extended class discussions about the chances of events happening, and differences between unconditional and conditional probabilities. Special emphasis should be put on understanding what the sample space is for each question.

This task lets students explore the concepts of probability as a fraction of outcomes, and using two-way tables of data. The special emphasis is on developing their understanding of conditional probability and independence. This task could be used as a group activity where students cooperate to formulate a plan of how to answer each question and calculate the appropriate probabilities. The task could lead to extended class discussions about the different ways of using probability to justify general claims.

This is a very open ended task. It poses the question, but the students have to formulate a plan to answer it, and use the two-way table of data to find all the necessary probabilities. The special emphasis is on developing their understanding of conditional probability and independence. This task could be used as a group activity where students cooperate to formulate a plan of how to answer the question and calculate the appropriate probabilities. The task could lead to extended class discussions about the different ways of using probability to justify general claims.

To Regroup or Not To Regroup

This task presents an incomplete problem and asks students to choose numbers to subtract (subtrahends) so that the resulting problem requires different types of regrouping. This way students have to recognize the pattern and not just follow a memorized algorithm--in other words, they have to think about what happens in the subtraction process when we regroup. This task is appropriate to use after students have learned the standard US algorithm.

The purpose of this task is to engage students in geometric modeling, and in particular to deduce algebraic relationships between variables stemming from geometric constraints. The modelling process is a challenging one, and will likely elicit a variety of attempts from the students.

Top 5 Hits of Math 6/7/8: Summative Project
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Students in Mathematics 6/7/8 work in mixed-grade groups to determine a “Top 5” list of concepts from the course based on provided criteria developed over the course of the year. Students choose a format in which to share their “Top 5” including rationale for why each concept connects to mathematics outside of the classroom. Ultimately, students present their conclusions in an attempt to convince the panel that their “Top 5” is the most deserving of entering the Mathematics Hall of Fame. I decided to use mixed-grade groups for this project in an attempt to encourage more rich conversation as students need to explain concepts in order to convince their peers of their importance. The timing of this project at the end of the year also allows the work to serve as review for final written evaluations.

Parts (a) and (b) of the task ask students to find the unit rates that one can compute in this context. Part (b) does not specify whether the units should be laps or km, so answers can be expressed using either one.

This task, while involving relatively simple arithmetic, codes to all three standards in this cluster, and also offers students a good opportunity to practice modeling (MP4), since they must attempt to make reasonable assumptions about the average length of vehicles in the traffic jam and the space between vehicles. Teachers can encourage students to compare their solutions with other students.

It is much easier to visualize division of fraction problems with contexts where the quantities involved are continuous. It makes sense to talk about a fraction of an hour. The context suggests a linear diagram, so this is a good opportunity for students to draw a number line or a double number line to solve the problem.

Transforming the Graph of a Function

This task examines, in a graphical setting, the impact of adding a scalar, multiplying by a scalar, and making a linear substitution of variables on the graph of a function f. The setting here is abstract as there is no formula for the function f. The focus is therefore on understanding the geometric impact of these three operations.

Transversal
Read the Fine Print

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the transversal, a line that crosses two other (usually parallel) lines. The applet shows two lines that are initially parallel, and a transversal line. All eight angles thus formed are shown. As you drag the transversal end points, you can see that the angles form congruent, supplementary and complementary sets. If you move one of the parallel lines to make it non-parallel, you can see that these angles lose some of their relationship with each other. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector.
