Social Studies 2: Community Collaboration Using iPad/iMovie
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

The three Grade 2 classes at OES were divided into small groups, to produce a video of the services offered by the Jim Kook Recreation Complex in Outlook, Sk. Each group was given an area of the recplex that provides a recreational service to the community. These included curling rink, bowling alley, archery, etc. Students began with an activity to describe their specific area. Teachers had provided a screen shot within each area for eatery student. Students were then given the opportunity to practice taking video with the iPad. The next step was to visit the recplex and have each child video their specific screen shot. This was planned around an afternoon of Bowling and Skating for the Grade Two students. Each group was pulled from their activity to shoot their video. At a later date, students were given the opportunity to edit and voice over their video footage. This worked well when all the students were doing an art activity with one teacher, and the other two teachers were able to pull the students in small groups to do the editing.

Today, we’re going to talk about how HUGE programs with millions of lines of code like Microsoft Office are built. Programs like these are way too complicated for a single person, but instead require teams of programmers using the tools and best practices that form the discipline of Software Engineering. We'll talk about how large programs are typically broken up into into function units that are nested into objects known as Object Oriented Programming, as well as how programmers write and debug their code efficiently, document and share their code with others, and also how code repositories are used to allow programmers to make changes while mitigating risk.

Solar Energy Defenders Game

PHYSICAL SCIENCE, EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE
Use what you learn about solar energy to save the school dance from vampires in this super cool solar energy game. Collect energy during the day using solar panels to ward off the vampires at night. Consider sun angle, tilt, shadows and time of year to maximize your energy collection - good luck!

ABOUT THE SCIENCE
Did you know only absorbed light can be converted to electricity? What ways can you use the electricity that is converted from solar panels?
Using solar energy in your home or business has a lot of benefits: it is free, clean, and infinitely renewable. It also reduces utility costs, increases energy self-reliance, and is extremely reliable. So, how does it work?
Solar energy uses the direct conversion of light into electricity at the atomic level (photovoltaic cells) to generate electricity from solar energy and this process is called the photoelectric effect. Materials absorb photons of light and release electrons. When electrons are captured, an electric current results that can be used as electricity in our homes.
Before we get the electricity in our homes, there are a variety of factors that need to be considered with solar energy: solar altitude or height of the sun and the angle throughout the day, and keeping solar panels shadow free are just a few.

Students are provided with an understanding of sound and light waves through a "sunken treasure" theme a continuous storyline throughout the lessons. In the first five lessons, students learn about sound, and in the rest of the lessons, they explore light concepts. To begin, students are introduced to the concepts of longitudinal and transverse waves. Then they learn about wavelength and amplitude in transverse waves. In the third lesson, students learn about sound through the introduction of frequency and how it applies to musical sounds. Next, they learn all about echolocation what it is and how engineers use it to "see" things in the dark or deep underwater. The last of the five sound lessons introduces acoustics; students learn how different materials reflect and absorb sound.
