Introduction to How Crime Scene Investigation Works
Rating
0.0 stars

On TV shows like "CSI," viewers get to watch as investigators find and collect evidence at the scene of a crime, making blood appear as if by magic and swabbing every mouth in the vicinity. Many of us believe we have a pretty good grip on the process, and rumor has it criminals are getting a jump on the good guys using tips they pick up from these shows about forensics.

But does Hollywood get it right? Do crime scene investigators follow their DNA samples into the lab? Do they interview suspects and catch the bad guys, or is their job all about collecting physical evidence? In this article, we'll examine what really goes on when a CSI "processes a crime scene" and get a real-world view of crime scene investigation from a primary scene responder with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

An interactive applet and associated web page that show the behavior of irregular polygons. The applet shows initially an irregular convex polygon. All vertices are draggable and when dragged show that this has no effect on any other vertex. The polygon can be made regular, and the number of sides changed between 3 and 99. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate isosceles triangles (two sides the same length). The applet presents a triangle where the user can drag any vertex. As the vertex is dragged the others move automatically to keep the triangle isosceles. The angles are also updated continuously to show that the base angles are always congruent. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. An interactive applet and associated web page that provide step-by-step animated instructions on how to construct an isosceles triangle with given base and altitude using only a compass and straightedge. The animation can be run either continuously like a video, or single stepped to allow classroom discussion and thought between steps. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. Our students will be studying and exploring the human impact on groundwater. They will study the water deprivation impacts both locally and in the San Joaquin Valley. Students will explore and come to understand the benefits of collecting rainwater. We partnered with the City of Eugene and had the wonderful Jackie come in. Our students brought in many of the materials including cardboard boxes, empty plastic containers (sour cream, water bottles, etc), tin foil, wax paper, duct tape, etc. We as teachers provided the underground sprinkler tubing cutting material, more tape and supplies. We tested this project with our 5th graders so we could make improvements and continue this project next year. In order to complete this project, we needed a full three weeks of working for an hour plus every day. We incorporated this project into our reading and science timeline.

'A Journey into Time Immemorial' is based on the story of Xá:ytem Longhouse in Mission BC in the Fraser Valley just east of Vancouver BC. Simon Fraser University worked closely with the staff at Xá:ytem to produce this award winning website. It is an artistic and cultural interpretation and is not meant to convey precisely accurate archaeological information. Contemporary archaeologists view First Nations as partners and value oral traditions as a source of information about the past that augments the scientific approach.
