If you're at all like me, you're always looking for short poems for your emerging readers. Learning letter sounds, sight words, word endings, etc., is essential but doesn't do any good if students don't have enough opportunities to take that isolated learning to the task of real reading. This product includes 20 original poems (by me) in 2 formats for emerging readers and writers. This is a reading and "writing with a twist" product. Not only will students be reading and rereading poems daily, students will also be copying the poems to strengthen hand muscles, increase writing stamina and word production speed. There *is* value to copying. I can't tell you the number of times that I see students take 20-30 minutes to write something that should take them 5, or 2nd graders who complain "my hand hurts" after 5 minutes of copying a paragraph off the board. Being able to produce letters and words quickly is an essential skill...and the short burst "Read & Copy" Book in this product gives students an opportunity to be cognizant and aware of the time it takes them to write. There is a weekly graph included so when you assemble the Read & Copy books for students each month, the graph would be the last page. The graph is designed to raise writing stamina awareness and give students an opportunity to set writing stamina goals from month to month.

These activities introduce students to the use of sampling for advertising purposes. They also generates a discussion about how advertisers use gimmicks to get people to buy more of their product. Even young students will admit that they have been induced to buy fast food meals in order to collect all of the toys.

Today we’re going to talk about good and bad surveys. From user feedback surveys, telephone polls, and those questionnaires at your doctors office, surveys are everywhere, but with their ease to create and distribute, they're also susceptible to bias and error. So today we’re going to talk about how to identify good and bad survey questions, and how groups (or samples) are selected to represent the entire population since it's often just not feasible to ask everyone.

In which John Green teaches you about Nationalism. Nationalism was everywhere in the 19th century, as people all over the world carved new nation-states out of old empires. Nationalist leaders changed the way people thought of themselves and the places they lived by reinventing education, military service, and the relationship between government and governed. In Japan, the traditional feudal society underwent a long transformation over the course of about 300 years to become a modern nation-state. John follows the course of Japanese history from the emergence of the Tokugawa Shogunate to the Meiji Restoration, and covers Nationalism in many other countries along the way. All this, plus a special guest appearance, plus the return of an old friend on a extra-special episode of Crash Course.

The San Diego Zoo Kids site offers thousands of resources for educators, including lesson plans, games, live feeds of animals, and detailed information on a variety of species from the African dwarf crocodile to the Western lowland gorilla.
This site is excellent for animal research projects.
There are a number of excellent videos and you can even watch a number of animals LIFE via WEB CAM (koala, ape, condor, elephant, panda, penguins, polar bear & tiger). Students can search videos for recorded clips at the bottom of the videos tab.
There are also games, activities and stories on the site.
Be sure to click the "for grown ups" section at the top right of the screen to see how you can a number of teacher resources and even book a video-conference for your class.

Last year the Siuslaw 97J School District changed our food service operation from a national supplier (Chartwell’s) to in-house food service. Our Food Service Manager instituted an organic philosophy and wanted to source local produce. Utilizing our school garden program we now help supply fresh produce for our Siuslaw Elementary School cafeteria. Crop production is stronger in the 4/5 wing because of wind protection from the building. Florence experiences high winds and we are located close to the beach so we have constant sand blowing into our crops. The K-3 garden beds do not have the same protection as the 4/5 beds, and as a result have a lower yield. Our goal is to have students design and engineer wind barriers for these beds and then present the best solutions to our school board so that we can get funding to implement our ideas. This project can be used in any school with a garden by using preexisting barriers on a the school property. The unique environment of the school would dictate the lessons required to be adapted to fit the environmental needs of the community. If the school is lacking a garden, the students can focus on an at home garden project.

This is an activity about the differences in thermal behavior between similar materials having different physical properties. Learners will measure temperature of two different surfaces; sand and stone; on a sunny day, make a series of temperature measurements, and plot the results. Extensions include experimenting with different materials, using temperature sensors and noncontact infrared thermometers. The activity is analogous with remote sensing of thermal properties in the Saturn system measured by Cassini. (Note: a separate version of this activity was developed in 2008 for PUMAS - Practical Uses of Math and Science).

In this activity, students are introduced to the concept of remote sensing. In the course of this experiment, students will investigate heat conduction on two surfaces and understand the application of these techniques to spacecraft investigations of surfaces in the solar system. Materials required for the outdoor demonstration include a cement step, sand, laboratory thermometers, foam rubber, and a meter stick. An optional indoor experimental set up uses twin desk lamps with equal-wattage tungsten bulbs and an infrared thermometer. A student datasheet accompanies the activity. This resource is from PUMAS - Practical Uses of Math and Science - a collection of brief examples created by scientists and engineers showing how math and science topics taught in K-12 classes have real world applications.

The purpose of this task is to give students experience in using simulation to determine if observed results are consistent with a given model (in this case, the Ňjust guessingÓ model). Part (i) also addresses the role of random assignment in the design of an experiment and assesses understanding of this concept.
