Students explore the menu genre by analyzing existing menus from local restaurants. They review adjectives and descriptive writing and then work in groups to create their own custom menus.
The purpose of the video lesson is to learn about the part of speech, adjectives. The accompanying handout reviews what adjectives are, provides practice using adjectives and gives the opportunity to to write a response journal using interesting adjectives.
This video lesson reviews using adjectives to describe nouns, as well the use of precise verbs and sentence endings (phrase) when creating interesting sentences. The accompanying handout has students manipulate sentence parts to make sentences.

Every student in Ms. Montgomerys class draws a picture of a monster and then writes a descriptive paragraph about it. Ms. Hoover then connects this class with another via video conference. This new class must now draw pictures based on the descriptions from the first class, who are now very aware of the importance of details in descriptive writing.
This lesson focuses on people at work depicted in a work of art. Students practice using vocabulary related to people and work. Activities emphasize oral and written descriptions of the people portrayed in the work of art, using job-related vocabulary and adjectives to describe feelings. Students are challenged to infer what job individuals are doing, based on such clues as their pose.
