Show Me Your Math – Connecting Math to Our Lives and Communities

Show Me Your Math is a program that invites Aboriginal Students in Atlantic Canada to explore the mathematics that is evident in their own community and cultural practices. Through exploring aspects of counting, measuring, locating, designing, playing, and explaining, students discover that mathematics is all around them and is connected to many of the cultural practices in their own communities.

The "Let's Learn Together" section of the website offers information and videos on:

- Paddle Making

Mathletics is a powerful tool or weapon of “mass instruction”. This session will show you how to use Mathletics to identify which outcomes your students are currently meeting, and where there are gaps in their learning.  This outcome specific information can be provided for the class overall and each individual student by using the assessments available in Mathletics.  Mathletics can also be used to help fill those learning gaps by using differentiation, and using the information from student activities to group students for small group instruction based on their results from activities.  Come and learn how to put this amazing tool to work for you and your students this year.

"The Variable is a periodical by the Saskatchewan Mathematics Teachers’ Society that aims to publish content rooted in the lives and work of mathematics teachers and to amplify the voices of educators working in diverse contexts across the province. The Variable features articles, interviews, puzzles and problems, information about upcoming professional development opportunities, and more. Our audience includes diverse members of the Canadian mathematics education community, including elementary and secondary school teachers, math coaches and consultants, and teacher educators. "The Visible LearningTM research base is the culmination of his quest over the past 25 years to answer this question and represents more than 1,600 meta-analyses comprising more than 96,000 studies involving more than 300 million students around the world.

Through the Visible LearningTM research, John Hattie has identified more than 250 factors that influence student achievement. He then set about calculating a score or “effect size” for each, according to its bearing on student achievement. The average effect size of these 250 factors was 0.4, a marker that can be shown to represents an (average) year’s growth per year of schooling for a student. Any factor that has an effect size above 0.4 has an even greater positive effect on student learning.

Each of these factors have been categorized into one of nine domains

StudentFactors relating to background, beliefs, and physical influences
Home Factors relating to family resources, structure, and environment
School Factors related to school-type, pre-school, school composition, and leadership
Classroom Factors related to class composition, giftedness, and classroom influences

White Rose Maths - Free Maths Teaching Resources

White Rose Math is a teacher group which offers math training and resources, including lesson plans and ideas. The resources on the site are meant for parents and teachers. The content is organized by grade level based on the British system. The White Rose Maths Team has prepared a series of maths lessons for each year group from Year 1-8. Every lesson comes with an answer key and a short video showing the teacher or parent clearly and simply how to help the child to complete the activity successfully.

This excellent video about Math Anxiety examines a variety of topics including: the cause of math anxiety, the impact it has working memory and learning, and how we can try to reduce this anxiety.

This video was watched as part of Sun West's "Math the Big Picture" PD, as part of "The Big 5". This is important to consider when setting the stage for learning.

Mission: Inspiring Math Success for all Students through Growth Mindsets and Innovative Teaching.

YouCubed is a combined effort of Jo Boaler, and Stanford university. The site provides resources, courses, tasks, and various other tools to encourage growth mindset in the area of mathematics. There are a number of paid and free resources. The information and the tasks are varied across the grades and are quite expansive. There is much to read and explore through this site, it is a wealth of information and useful content.
